I have a daughter, who at 10 years of age went on a Girl Scout camping trip and was, along with several other girls and a leader, possibly bitten by a bat. Knowing that a bat usually carries the rabies virus and a bite is fatal, there was no option but to submit her to a painful series of shots to prevent the rabies virus from becoming activated.
It started with an immunoglobulin injection and from there a series of 5 shots at different intervals over a period of 28 days. Every one of those steps created an immune response that helped produce antibodies and missing any one shot would have suppressed the benefits of the others and put her at a higher risk.
