1978 International Harvester Scout II
1978 International Harvester Scout II that first caught our eye, as we drove down the highway through a tiny town in Colorado.
We were on a short weekend trip over the Fourth of July holiday to visit my sister where she was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO. We are were driving through Penrose, CO on the way to Canon City, CO to go on a train ride. Both my husband and I saw the Scout sitting on the used car dealer's lot. You couldn't miss it with it bright paint job. But neither one of us said anything about it.
Later that day, on the drive back to Colorado Springs, I said "Should we stop and look at the crazy looking truck?". My husband couldn't believe I brought it up. He had silently noted the Scout too. So we stopped and looked at what was a 1978 International Harvester Scout II. We did a test drive and inquired how much the car dealer wanted for it. He said he wanted $4000. We offered him $2000. We came to an agreement for $2800, with an additional check for $300 that he would cash in a few days, as long as the '78 Scout made it all the way home - to Phoenix, AZ, which it did. So we paid a total of $3100 for it. Which was a steal of a price. The Scout was in relatively good shape, had good tires, was 4x4, and had a removable hard top.

Driving the IHC Scout II Home
800 Miles from Colorado to Arizona
My husband cancelled his plane ticket back to Phoenix and drove the 1978 International Scout II home, a total of 800 miles. He said it started to rain and the windshield wipers didn't work. Something we didn't even think to check before we bought it, because we live in Arizona where it NEVER rains. But he made it home ok. And we were to proud new owners of this awesome old SUV.
"The BEAST"
1978 International Harvester Scout II 4x4

The Scout was like a huge tank. We nicknamed it "The BEAST". This picture was taken at the car dealership when we bought it, with it's hardtop still on. Once we got it home to Arizona we promptly took off the removable hardtop. Which made it look even more like an old Jeep (it's main competitor at the time of manufacture). It was the perfect fun old car.
Sadly, about 3 years later, we were in a great deal of financial stress and had to sell it to an acquaintance in order to pay some bills. We ended up selling it for $4000, which was more than we paid for it, but still a bargain price for the buyer. There's no way to buy a Scout II here in Phoenix for that cheap. We were lucky to find it and buy it like we did. There's a lot of people who are International Scout enthusiasts, and even entire websites dedicated to the vehicle. We will probably buy another one, or something similar in the near future. Our oldest son is almost old enough for his license, and a big old SUV or truck would be perfect for him to drive around in.
With the Scout's Top Off
Our Scout II with its Removable Hardtop OFF
Here's "The Beast" once we got it back to Phoenix and took the top off. Sorry, that's NOT a picture of me, but rather my dad and mom taking it out for a spin. That is my dog, Bailey, in the back. We would often load up our dogs (we have 3), and go for a spin around town in the summer evenings. It was a great head turner!
Even though we had to sell this one, we hope to someday buy another one or something similar, down the road. Here's some cool old International Scouts for sale on eBay below.

- My 78 Scout was red with a cream top. Here in Massachusetts we had a huge blizzard early in '78, so I bought it new with a snowplow. Naturally we had almost no plowable snow for the next two years. Drove it on the dunes on Cape Cod and surf casting for striped bass on the beach on Martha's Vineyard. Great fun.

The Scout Rules!
PaperQuest says:
The Scout is way cooler than the Jeep!
WaynesWorld says:
When I was a teenager I thought I wanted the Jeep pickup, now I would say it's a "coin toss." Either way you have benefits and either way you have negatives.
The Jeep, all the way!

It's NOT a Suburban
It's an International Harvester Travelall

When my husband was growing up in a family of six, they had an International Harvester Travelall. He remembers that every summer they would drive from Montana to Minnesota to visit their grandparents. Their parents would take out the back seat out and put down a mattress. The four kids would sleep in the back while their parents drove through the night. His parents talk about those trips now, and say that when they would get to Minnesota, the kids would be wide awake and ready to run all over the place on the farm. And they would be SO tired from driving all night.
I wonder what happened to that old Travelall? Where is it now? And how many other families have used it since then? Or is it in a junk yard somewhere?
