International Stuttering Awareness Day
Ranked #22,216 in Healthy Living, #322,469 overall
October 22 is International Stuttering Awareness Day
In 1998, October 22 was designated International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD). On this day every year stuttering / stammering organisations from around the world participate in raising public awareness of the millions of people who have the speech disorder of stuttering, about 90 million people worldwide.
ISAD is regulated by four organisations:
~ American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Special Interest Division #4, Fluency & Fluency Disorders
~ European League of Stuttering Associations
~ International Fluency Association
~ International Stuttering Association
ISAD incorporates an online conference, targeted at people with an interest in stuttering, including speech pathologists and their clients. The 2011 Online Conference is titled
Sharing Stories - Changing Perceptions.
2009 marked the debut of a stuttering awareness ribbon. Its colour is sea green. Blue has traditionally been associated with calm, while green represents freedom and justice. The combination of these colours reflects the bond between peace and liberation. For People Who Stutter (PWS), it symbolises the support and community with other people who understand and share their experiences.
Remember to wear sea-green clothes or the ribbon on 22 October to raise awareness about stuttering / stammering and the issues people who stutter face every day.
