The darkside of the Internet: What Do You Want Your Family/Children to See?

The internet can be a great place to find just about anything on information that is available.  It has come a long way from the beginning, however with all good things, evil tends to find a way into the mix.

This leads to concerned parents trying to keep grips on what their children view on the net.  Some would say the internet is worse than the radio.  You just don't know what may come up around the next corner with content.  Unlike the radio, what is worse about the net is that it is visual, audible, and readable.

So what do you do to help keep your children from this dangerous content?  There are some simple steps to take we are going to be discussing in this lens.

Tips to Keep Children Safe On the Internet

Basic Parental Internet Guidelines

First and foremost, think about where the family computer is sitting. Is it in a central, highly traveled, highly visible area? Some homes have a breakfast nook (area) off of the kitchen, this would be an ideal place. The last place to allow a computer is in the privacy of the child's bedroom.

Second, don't be afraid to put restrictions on the time a child spends on the internet. It is very important that they get exercise than to be sitting in front of a computer or gaming console for the bulk of the day. If you have multiple children, a time chart or sign up sheet works well. You may want to set a maximum time allowance per child.

Third, knowledge of newest fads are important. Keep in mind what they are into. Things like, Myspace.com, Facebook.com, Instant Messengers, and SecondLife.com. These are just a few of the latest trends on the net. With this knowledge, don't be afraid to be inquisitive on the material they are posting, viewing, or talking about. They are your children after all, and until they are eighteen, they are on your accountability.

Fourth, web cams have their place, but I would never allow a child (teens maybe, depending on responsibility) use a web camera alone. This is a predator's playground. All in all, I would completely shy away from a web camera unless you are there to supervise.

Last but not least, the internet is also in the games they play. Watch over them and consider the games they play. Sometimes the titles, descriptions, and ratings can be deceiving. If you don't approve of the game, they don't have to be allowed to play it. Remember your the parent(s).

How to Catch....

These videos can be somewhat disturbing to any parent, however it is the truth about the dangers of the Internet.

Be advised: Viewer discretion is recommended that adults watching this material proceed with caution. I would not watch this while children are around. It is a clip from Dateline, so it is approved for public television, but still consider the content.
