I found your Lens very informative as someone who is basically in the same shoes. I have the drive, a considerable amount of knowledge but just can't quite get the traffic/sales conversion I need. Was wondering if you would take a look at my site and offer some suggestions as to how I can help people and supplement my income at the same time. I am disabled, cannot work and have no income so the ship is rapidly sinking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Posted February 23, 2008 |

Paul, you are so wise. I was so blind and didn't have a clue. I worried more about finances, safety for my kids, my J.O.B. performance, etc. But, I have learned so much in the last year! Who knew? Posted February 17, 2008 |

I'm tired of getting emails like the following - and just deleting them, pretending they are not a problem. It occurs to me that there may be completely unsuspecting people out there who don't know these emails are scams: **Here is the 1st** Posted May 02, 2008 |

Thank You for your question! It is unfortunate that there are so many unsolicited frauds coming from Canada into our email accounts. I am suspicious of email coming from obvious Canadian originations. It's a shame - because I work with very reputable Canadians as an internet marketer. However, they are legitimate businesses and don't send those VERY obvious attempts at extortion... (i.e., lottery)! Posted February 10, 2008 |

"Network Marketing" vs. "Internet Marketing"
"They are both Legitimate Online Business Practices"
At this time I choose to focus solely on "Internet Marketing". In my opinion, Network marketing and Internet Marketing are two different forms of making money online.
Let me explain: I equate "Network" marketing with MLM (or Multi Level Marketing). Multi Level Marketing is sort of like purchasing the option to be involved in selling a product or earning percentages of units sold directly by you and then by anyone who you recruit into the business that is "below" you in a chain of other marketers who purchase the right to sell the same product/products.
Network Marketing is a valid method of earning money online. It is a real job. It's a "sales" job. It can pay well if you are actively recruiting members into your "downline" consistently.
Based on my own personal experience, here are some disadvantages with Multi Level Marketing (MLM - or Network Marketing):
1.
If you are already in a very bad financial situation, you are likely going to get into a worse situation if you are not 100% devoted to doing absolutely everything it takes to get people in your down-line.
2.
Most often, there are fees and required purchases for entering into business with an MLM company. Consider this your business investment, which in all reality, you are are entering into a business relationship and contract to become a distributor. So if this is realistic, and expected, why is it a disadvantage?
If you are venturing into working online because it has become your only viable source for income and you have NOTHING... you would have to somehow come up with the money to invest to get started, and with no guarantee of any success any time soon.
3.
When you are completely inexperienced with working online, you will have a large learning curve. That learning curve is going to cost you money. Experts can lay out everything for you, but there is a natural learning curve which must take place in order for you to comprehend or place the information into context. (This is actually true for all forms of marketing on the internet.)
4.
If you are not careful, you will pick up on some of the worst personal advice behavior I have ever seen. Some of the most successful network marketers have some very undesirable thought processes when it comes to cold calling and the attitude you should take with non-receptive people. If you are going to get into this business... please retain your personable traits and "take what you can use, and leave the rest". It's easy to get sucked in and become a follower... even for those of us who have never been "followers". When promises of money and riches come into play... you think you are getting the expert advice you need to succeed. Plenty of people have succeeded in MLM (network marketing) without becoming insensitive, demanding, and judgmental.
If you are a people-person, and have no problem cold-calling and interacting with people via parties and "salesman" mentality, then you might do ok. There is a term used quite frequently in the MLM profession, "law of averages". Simply put, this means that if you call 100 people in a day, at least a couple of them will "bite".
For me, personally, I am not a bubbly people person. I am a business oriented, love data, love writing, love working, love learning, and love teaching person. I choose not to interrupt peoples lives who are not looking for what I am offering. I don't like to be "bothered" and I choose not to bother others.
Have I dismissed the MLM profession? NO! I know who I am and I know what I want. I have made the decision to create a presence online, develop my advertising skills, understand the internet marketing community as a whole, and learn how to attract or advertise to people who WANT to be advertised to.
Once I have mastered those techniques, I will venture back into MLM in such a way that I will attract people into my business who are CONTACTING ME!
Can you see the power in that? This is all just purely my own opinion. You will learn very quickly that there are many opinions on this and every other internet marketing strategy on the internet.
Brief Intermission to Look at Some Interesting Marketing Trends
How to earn money at home on the internet
Internet Marketing vs. Network Marketing vs. Affiliate Marketing: This graph shows internet marketing remaining the top method for making money on the internet. Network marketing ( synonymous with mlm ) appears to be the next most popular search term of this series. I think many more people are searching for "mlm" to determine the following: whether or not it is legitimate, if it is risky, if it will help them get rich quick, and, basically, just doing a good job researching it. I know I did. Another thing to keep in mind, the search term "internet marketing" is a very broad and all-encompassing term. Still, this is a very interesting graph, don't you think?
Trends depict how to earn money on the internet
Affiliate vs. MLM vs. eCommerce: As I look at this graph, I see that the term "Affiliate" is being searched for much more often than both ecommerce and mlm search trends. To me, this reinforces my view that Affiliate Marketing is in the top three ways to earn money at home on the internet! I can only assume that people are searching for legal, realistic, and and respected forms of earning money online.
Take a Look at these Traffic Generation Trends
Video Ads vs. Social Marketing vs. Pay Per Click ads vs. Search engine optimization: From this statistical graph we can clearly see that pay per click advertising is practically non-existent, compared to Video, Social, and SEO traffic generation methods. I took the time to search for many variations on the pay per click search term... and they were all the same... Practically Non-Existent! Note how Video ads has a strong presence in search statistics. This is a very interesting trend graph. I am a huge proponent of using web 2.0 techniques to get traffic to your sites (whatever they may be).
So, then ... What is "Internet Marketing" ???
In my estimation, "Internet Marketing" is the equivalent to doing the following money making activities online:
There is, of course, a learning curve for understanding each of these methods of marketing as they pertain to the internet.
To participate in these legitimate work from home jobs, you will need to learn and implement some very important skills:
How to use new age marketing techniques to attract buyers (widely referred to as Web 2.0)
How to research and learn without getting caught up in information overload! (common challenge)
How to determine when and where to invest the money you haven't got into your online education and resources
How to collect and organize your "research" in such a way that you can easily find it on your hard drive again
How to spot and avoid scams or time and money wasters
How to "spy" on successful internet marketers to learn from them without getting sucked into every wonderful course and educational document out there
And, the list goes on (there's just too much to list here and I am writing articles on each of these topics in the near future)
Just know, this industry is work. While it's end goal is to provide you with more time and more passive income, for the beginners - it's a full-time job. Everything listed above is a bullet on your position description.
The downfall, -- there is a giant learning curve if you are dead serious and want to (or need to) make this your means of income.
Most likely, you will not make money right away. If someone (like me - or like many great internet marketers out there) could grab ahold of you right when you get on the internet to start your "work at home" research, and tell you step by step... this is what you do first... then this... etc.,
In summary, life is all about choices...
Is There a Difference? - You Decide...
Let's Debate: "Network Marketing" vs. "Internet Marketing"
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byI understand your frustration with MLM. I think if you have a good, solid foundation on the internet (i.e., people know who you are and you know how to market and who to market to)-- it can be a lucrative and honest business. It takes time, practice, training, and a good, honest, and ethical product or service.
Posted April 09, 2008
I agree they are not the same. And, I hate MLM!
