What Can I do to Protect Myself from Internet Identity Theft?

Identity Theft, The use of Personal Identifying Information, is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States and has ranked as one of the top consumer concerns.

Protect yourself from malicious Software, such as Viruses, trojans, spyware, keystroke loggers by using a Anti Virus Software, Spyware protection software or a Firewall.

Be Careful when downloading files or Opening emails that  may be infected by viruses. Theives can use these means to steal your Identity.

Never give out your personal Information to an unsolicited request If you didn't make the first contact then you should contact the company and make sure it is a legitimate contact.

View your Account Statements regulary and check for any irregularties.

Monitor your credit report to check for any red flags, such as Inqueries from company's you haven't contacted, Debts you can't explain, Accounts you didn't open, Addresses you don't recognize, etc. You have the right to one FREE credit report a year. You can go to annualcreditreport.com to request one. If you find that you may be a Victim of Identity Theft contact one of the Three major credit reporting bureaus to place a Fraud Alert on your report.

 

How do Identity Thieves steal my Information with the Internet? 

There are a couple of ways thieves will use the internet to still your Identity.
One of the more noticeable ways is Internet Phishing or Electronic Scams.
When you receive a email stating that you have won a prize, or that their is a problem with an account of yours, etc. and that you need to click on the link that asks for your personal information.
*Always be cautious and on the look out for fraudulent emails. Never give your personal information. Financial Institutions and other prestigious company's will never ask for your password.
Another way Internet Thieves steal your personal information is through different types of malware.
Malware can effect your computer when you download an Infected site or when you open an infected email.
By the time you have detected your computer has a virus the thieves may already have your information. This is why it is important to have an anti virus software or spyware protection software installed.
