India: A Homeschool Unit Study

India :: A Land of Intrigue

When teaching our children ancient history, we are sure to include Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome. Unfortunately we sometimes omit another great ancient civilization on the other side of the globe-- Ancient India.

Maybe we ourselves don't know much about Ancient India, or we have no resources that cover Ancient India. If you've come to this page, you are probably wanting to teach your child about Ancient India. Congratulations! The study of Ancient India is fascinating.

This page was created to help you design your own unit study about Ancient India.

This is a wonderful production - stunning photography. The six hour series by Michael Wood is filled with verbal information, as well as gorgeous shots of the Indian landscape and towns. It traces the history of the sub-continent from 30,000 years ago to the present, discussing the exploration and settling of the country by the earliest immigrants, and the spread of languages and language groups over the region.

Diwali for Kids
Diwali is celebrated by Hindus in India and all around the world in October or November. It is the Hindu New Year and is either a 3-day or 5-day holiday depending on where you come from. It is a very exciting and colourful holiday. Homes are cleaned to welcome the New Year and windows are opened so that the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, can enter. It is believed that she cannot enter a house which is not lit up, so every household burns special Diwali clay lamps (diyas) to light the way for the goddess, which is why the holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights.

We've never done a unit study on India. I have a unit study on a country for each letter of the alphabet, but we did Italy for I. This has some great ideas! I'll be coming back here when we study India. Thank you! Keep up the great work! Blessed and liked.

India has given to the world our numbering system that we know today. Without this method of counting there would be know astronomy as we know it today or computations mathmatical methods such as the binary counting system which has lead to the development of our first computers.

I'm always curious about India. My sister lived there for ten years. This should be really helpful for teachers.
