Invisalign Aligners or Braces?

The first thing one notices about the "Mona Lisa" is her smile.
If you have decided to make your smile more magnificent, please read on.

Invisalign aligners or standard metal/ceramic braces - this is a question which deserves some serious consideration prior to making the choice between products.
There are many serious social and medical aspects which should weigh heavily on your decision making process.

Social Aspects

Pre-pubescent individuals are often the first to put a name to those with braces, but it is not limited to this social group.
Often, persons with metal braces of any age or social setting are pegged with names such as "metal mouth," "railroad tracks," or "brace face," just to name a few.
Especially as a developing adult, these labels can have a negative and long-lasting effect.
While the standard braces are readily visible, the Invisalign aligners, as the name implies, are virtually invisible to others, and therefore, reduce the probability of name-calling.

Comfort

Invisalign aligners are custom fit to the patient's mouth with the aid of a 3-D plan of the entire treatment timeline.
They are changed dependent upon the amount of the correction necessary. Since there are no metal braces, wires, or brackets involved and the process is very gradual, there is very little, if any pain involved.

Standard braces involve metal and a compression or spreading process which can be quite painful at the time of application and at the time of each adjustment.
Getting used to the braces, wires, and brackets can cause sore areas in the mouth, gums, and teeth. Special wax may need to be applied to the braces area where there are ulcerated spots of the mouth.

Dental Hygiene

Hygiene is a very important factor in the decision-making process.
In comparison, Invisalign aligners are removed while eating where standard braces and brackets must remain in place all times.

Braces and brackets leave many small and inaccessible areas where food and plaque can be difficult to remove and can cause the possibility of tooth decay and tooth discoloration.

In order to maintain good oral hygiene with braces, the wearer must use a special toothbrush, an oral irrigator, and a fluoride mouth rinse to strengthen the enamel and repair microscopic cavities.
In the case of the Invisalign aligners, the wearer must merely brush and floss after eating and prior to putting the aligners back in.

Participation in Sports

Sports activities can also pose a threat to the wearer of braces. When engaging in contact sports, the individual must be custom fit with a mouth guard.
In the event of facial impact, and without protective gear, the braces, wires, and brackets can cause serious damage to the lips and gums and, possibly, cause permanent tooth damage.

A custom fit mouth guard is costly but the standard commercial brands may have gaps and increase the possibility of a greater chance of mouth injury.

Medical Testing

One of the most accurate medical tests for brain injury or illness is the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan. If the person being scanned for head injury or illness is wearing metal braces, the MRI will be not as diagnostic.

The magnet will pick up metal artifacts (a signal void shown as a black spot) in the lower part of the brain, thus hampering the physician reading the scan from getting an accurate picture of the entire brain.

While there are many arguments in favor of, or in opposition of, each product, both comfort and health considerations make Invisalign aligners a more-practical choice for many.
