Irish Wolf Hounds: The Largest Dog in the World

Ranked #1,432 in Pets & Animals, #38,636 overall

I love Irish Wolf Hounds...

This page grew out of my love for Irish Wolf Hounds. They have served us and stood by us for centuries and this site is dedicated to them and all they have done through time for us

Irish Wolf Hounds: What type of dog are they?

Physical Characteristics of the Breed

Irish Wolf Hounds are considered the largest dog in the world. It is argued that they may not be by weight but generally they are by height. They are considered normal for the breed when they are at least 32 inches tall and 120 pounds for the male and 30 inches tall and 105 pounds for the female. Although, even these standards vary depending on who publishes them.

Like every other official dog breed there are many specific qualifications that would rank them high on the most representative of the breed. There are some very specific requirements listed at the AKC site.

An breed has a rather square head and a slim body. Usually they have a white and grey mixed color coat of medium length but sometimes the color can be a combination of tanish brown with a redish tone or even black tones. A distinguishing trait that these dogs have besides being the largest dog in the world, is their ability to see very well. It was effectively used in the time when they were breed for war. In Roman times they were so feared that they were often moved in a lion cage but today's breed is known as "a gentle giant".

In a post for another day I will be discussing the health and well being of the largest dog in the world but as a precursor I am posting a disturbing video that talks about what is going on in the dog food industry that came to everyone's attention in 2007. Take a quick look at the video below and see if you find it as informative as I did.

Irish Wolf Hounds Doesn't Come Cheap...

but you are getting a lot for your money!

I recently saw this ad for a 15 month old online and wanted to post it to give you some idea what one might pay if you decided to get one of these wonderful dogs.

Price $1200

CKC Registered. Wonderful with children and other pets. This brindle male needs more room and time. He is only 15 months old, house trained all shots up to date. Paid 2000 however are asking 1200 and would consider any reasonable offer. Picture taken approximately 7 months ago. 613) 257-1244

Our gorgeous rescue dog is an Irish Wolfhound cross. He looks like an IWH but, while still big, a little smaller (luckily). "Houston" has an amazing calm nature and loved being with us and the kids from the moment he came to our home. Despite me being more of a cat person Houston absolutely captured my heart from the first day.... I have never met a dog like him. He is just gorgeous. I can't believe how lucky we are to have found him.

I've had a few different breeds in my life but once you are owned by a Wolfie, you never go back to the other breeds. I know this because right now I have a little rescue French Bulldog and as cute as she is, I never loved a dog like my Wolfies. Yes they don't live much more than 8 years but what they give in those few short years.... I know they're not cheap to buy but anyone out there has one that I could have inexpensively, let me know. They're like potato chips, can't just have one (in a lifetime). Thanks.

I really like you lens, I own a wolf hound and I agree with every you say. My Schreck is 2 years old, he is my first wolf hound but he won't be the last, I will only own wolfies from now on. He is great with the kids, he is so intelligent and such a goof. I also have a lens on the breed...look it up. Cheers.
