Is Your Skin Care Safe?

Many skin care products are not safe. Even if you buy your products in a health food store there is no guarantee that it is safe.

I guess it is obvious that you should not put anything toxic on your skin still there are very few Certified Organic Skin Care products.

Most of us are pretty conscious about what we eat. But how about what we put on our skin?

Doctor Mercola says that "Personally, I rarely put anything consciously on my skin that I wouldn't be willing to put in my mouth."

I totally agree. When did you last check your moisturizer for chemicals?

FDA sanctions toxins in cosmetics

Did you know FDA sanctions harmful ingredients in cosmetics and skin care?

This is from the FDA Handbook:

"With the exception of color additives and a few prohibited ingredients a cosmetic manufacturer may, on his own responsibility, use essentially any raw material as a cosmetic ingredient and market the product without approval. "

Mercury that according to the FDA are "readily absorbed though the skin on topical application and have the tendency to accumulate in the body. They may cause allergic reactions, skin irritation or neurotoxic manifestations." is allowed but is restricted within the eye area cosmetics.

It is the same story with the widely used dioxane which according to the FDA "was found to produce cancer of the liver and the nasal turbinates. It also caused systemic cancer in a skin painting study."

Even products from your Health Food Store cannot be trusted

Even if you go to your local Health Food store and buy product which says "Natural" and "Organic" this is no guarantee that the product is pure, natural and free of toxins.

The term organic is often used by the cosmetic industry according to its chemistry definition: organic is any compound containing carbon.

For example methyl paraben can actually be called organic even though it has been found in breast cancer tumors and is very common in skin care.

The same goes for the term natural.

I always thought that natural meant existing in or formed by nature - not artificial .

But the industry standard has become that natural is any ingredient derived from something natural. Derived with a synthetic process.

Redorbit article on green business "organic" is used as a hype.

This article on green business states that:

"Piggybacking on the popularity of the organic food movement, hundreds of skin and body care products have added "organic" to their labels. Unfortunately, the word is often just marketing hype, and products can contain a long list of chemical and synthetic ingredients. Many of these chemicals are known carcinogens, hormone disruptors, and neurotoxins."

How to find pure, natural, organic skin care?

Basically there are 2 ways to make sure your skin care is not toxic:

1. Become an ingredient detective

2. Buy CERTIFIED Organic products.

Become an Ingredient Detective

What you need to do is turn the bottle around and read the ingredients list.

As Doctor Mercola says: if you can't read or pronounce the ingredient, there is a high likelihood it should not be in your lotion or other skin care product.

Just listen to this:

- Isopropyl Palmitate (Palm Oil Derivate)
- Glyceryl Stearate SE (Vegetable Derived)
- Ceteareth - 12 (Organic Emulsifier)
- Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster)
- Sorbic Acid(Organic Compound)
- Methylparaben (Organic Compound)
- Propylparaben (Organic Compound)

It might sound good with the comments in brackets Vegetable Derived and Organic Compound. But listen to the real names Glyceryl Stearate, Ceteareth. They don't sound very a natural. And they are not natural at all.

All these substances are known to be toxic, corrosive or cause allergic reactions and acne.

Now compare the above list with this one:

- Certified Organic Aloe Vera
- Certified Organic Sunflower Seed Oil
- Purified Water
- Certified Organic Avocado Oil
- Certified Organic Shea Butter
- Non-GMO Lecithin
- Certified Organic Sugar-Cane Ethanol
- Natural gum
- Certified Organic Geranium Oil
- Certified Organic Patchouli Oil
- Natural Amber oil

Quite a difference, don't you think.

These are the pure, natural and organic ingredients of a Certified Organic Intensive Body Cream .

The point is you don't have not be an expert to know the difference between a natural, organic skincare product and a product that claims to be natural and organic but is really full of artificial chemicals.

Just read and try to pronounce the ingredients!

Buy CERTIFIED Organic products

This is the same as for food.

- For a product to be certified organic is has to be assessed by a 3rd party.
- It is government overseen.
- The criteria are strict both on the agricultural process and on the whole production process.
- And the company will undergo periodic on-site inspections.
