Brief History of Hawaii

Hawaii is diverse in ethic groups. Largest ethnic groups in Hawaii make up the Japanese. This is followed by Filipino, Hawaiian, Chinese and German. English is spoken here. Hawaiian language has been experiencing a rebirth to keep tradition.

The temperature this evening is a comfortable 80F.

While we are waiting to unload from the plane, here is a little information about the Island. Hawaii was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959, making it the 50th state. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The state's population according to the US Census Bureau in 2007 was estimated at 1,283,388.

The Big Island is 4,028 square miles (10,432 km²), it is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii is said to be named after Hawaiiloa, legendary Polynesian navigator. He was a hero of an ancient Hawaiian legend. He accidentally stumbled upon the islands. When Hawaiiloa returned to his homeland which he called Ka aina kai melemele a Kane a Kane, "the land of the yellow sea of Kane". Hawaiiloa organized an expedition with his family and eight other skilled navigators. They settled on what is now the Island of Hawaii named in his honor.

The island of Hawaii is famous for the active Kilauea volcano. We hope you get a chance to see the volcanoes, the beaches and all the beautiful sites that this great island has to offer.

Thanks for flying with us. Enjoy your stay.

Hawaii Through Someone Else's Eyes

Our daughter had a chance to visit Hawaii on her winter break, along with her boyfriend and his parents. She shared her pictures and memories of the once in a lifetime trip. The closest that I will ever get to Hawaii is though my daughter's experience.

While they were having temperatures in the 80s we had blustering cold temperatures with several inches of snow on the ground. Though most of the time, the sky was hazy in Hawaii due to the high emissions of gas coming from the volcano, Kilauea.

The first few days being in Hawaii, they were not able to rent a car. This left several trips to the beach, explore the area nearby and more time spent at the lovely Vista Waikoloa Condo (shown above) on the big island of Hawaii.

Dead Tree of Hawaii

During their time of exploration, our daughter took a picture of a dead tree overlooking the ocean. It was hazy that day, giving the tree and background a unique and eerie look.

Note: The picture in the middle is how it looked that day.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach

The Most Famous Black Sand Beach

Punalu'u Beach Park is the most famous black sand beach on the island. Here you can swim, snorkel or just stroll along the beach. Perhaps you will see a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle. They are frequent guess on this beach, sunbathing on the warm sand.

The black sand beaches found on this big island evolves from ground lava. This is located mostly on the southeast part of the island. The most volcanically active part of the island is located here. There is no other feeling like the soothing massaging feeling of the lava granules under foot. My daughter said that it was a unique experience like no other.

Kilauea Eruption

Kilauea the World's Most Active Volcano

Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Kilauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth.

The summit of Kilauea lies on a curving line of volcanoes that includes Mauna Kea and Kohala and excludes Mauna Loa. Hawaiians used the word Kilauea only for the summit caldera, but earth scientists and, over time, popular usage have extended the name to include the entire volcano.

Kilauea is the home of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess. The traditional legend tells of this goddess of fire creating the of many eruptions fomented by an angrer.

Before the first European, the missionary Rev. William Ellis, saw the summit in 1823. The caldera was the site of nearly continuous activity during the 19th century and the early part of this century. Since 1952 there have been 34 eruptions, and since January 1983 eruptive activity has been continuous along the east rift zone. All told, Kilauea ranks among the world's most active volcanoes and may even top the list.

No one was allowed to go near the volcano this entire time our daughter was in Hawaii. The emissions steaming from the volcano were considered unsafe.

Our daughter and her boyfriend went to a luau like this one. She did record it. But it hasn't been uploaded. This video looks almost like the one she had recorded.
