I am an American pianist based in Paris. In June 2006 I asked 6 composers in their 30's to write me a new 10-minute piece for solo piano.
Fernando Benadon, Reynold Tharp, Keeril Makan, Mei-Fang Lin, Brian Current, and Dmitri Tymoczko
The first two to finish were Fernando Benadon and Keeril Makan.
Fernando Benadon is a native of Buenos Aires with a background in jazz so it's not surprising that his music has a strong rhythmic groove. It's an eclectic mix of funky elements; once you've heard his music you always recognize it. I premiered Fernando's new work, Bugi Wugi, at Music for Wexford in Ireland on April 13th 2007. I'll record it in Washington D.C. in May, and continue to tour with it in May and June throughout Ireland. Fernando teaches at American University in D.C.
Keeril Makan's draws your attention by concentrating on a single sound and twisting it in and out of focus. He has a gutsy way of using silence to keep you on the edge of your seat. Keeril's piece will be premiered in Fall 2007 and recorded in the US shortly afterwards. Keeril recently began teaching at M.I.T.

- Memorization: I don't take on a piece if I don't intend to memorize it. Why? I hate going to concerts where musicians are staring at scores. I play much better if I've completely internalized a score.
- Multiple performances: If I've already put in the hours to learn a score, why not capitalize on that work? The first performance is just the beginning of the process for me. Mastery comes with time.
- Recording: The recording studio is just another step in the learning process. Composers also need great recordings to further their careers. Once I get to this stage the piece has been learned for life.
Ongoing Call for Scores
- Ivan's website
- 1) instrumentation: solo piano, piano + tape, or piano + electronics
2) length under 12 minutes long (it's OK if it's a little bit over)
3) no miniatures, please, unless they form a set
4) I prefer composers under 45, but everybody's welcome
5) Please email me a PDF and MP3 (MIDI is O.K.). I don't accept hard copies except from publishers.
Thanks for your interest!

Premiere of John L. King's Sonata
- The Inverness Chamber Music Society
- John L. King, an American composer based in Manchester, just finished a new Piano Sonata. I commissioned the piece and will premiere it on October 18th.
The piece is reminiscent of certain Messiaen pieces and Tippett's Second Sonata in that various motifs are juxtaposed in a mosaic-like form.
The comparison ends there, however, because unlike Messiaen and Tippett, John's writing evolves organically and the contrasts are less brutal.
The Sonata has a harmonic language that refers to tonality, but calling it tonal would be an oversimplification. It might be more accurate to say that tonality makes cameo appearances here and there.
John jokes about the fact that certain composers who have seen the score are 'shocked' at the fact that it has passages with octaves and phrase markings. - Listen to King's Piano Sonata
