İzmir - Smyrna

Known in Turkish as "Beautiful İzmir", the city lies at the head of a long and narrow gulf furrowed by ships and yachts. The climate is mild in the summer the constant and refreshing sea breezes temper the sun's heat. Behind the palm-lined promenades and avenues which follow the shoreline, the city, in horizontal terraces, gently ascends the slopes of the surrounding mountains.

İzmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country's largest port after İstanbul. It is located in the Gulf of İzmir, by the Aegean Sea. A cosmopolitan and lively city all year round, İzmir bursts with an added vibrancy during the International Arts Festival and the International Fair.

About İzmir

İzmir Hakkında

Beautiful Izmirİzmir is inheritor of almost 3500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. The city is one of the oldest settlements of the Mediterranean basin.

İzmir is characterized by long, hot summers and mild, rainy winters. The average maximum temperatures during the winter months vary between 12 and 14 °C. Although it's rare, snow has been recorded in İzmir in January and February. The summer months — June through September — bring average daytime temperatures of 28 °C or higher.

The city hosts an international arts festival during June/July, and İzmir International Fair, one among the city's many fair and exhibition events, is held in the beginning of September every year. It is served by national and international flights through Adnan Menderes Airport and there is a modern rapid transit line running Southwest to Northeast.

Izmir hosted the Mediterranean Games in 1971 and the World University Games (Universiade) in 2005. It has a running bid submitted to BIE to host the Universal Expo 2015, which will be voted in 2008. Modern Izmir also incorporates the nearby ancient cities like Ephesus, Pergamon, Sardis and Klazomenai, and centers of international tourism such as Kusadasi, Çesme and Foca.

The original city was established in the third millennium BC (at present day Bayraklı), at which time it shared with Troy the most advanced culture in Western Anatolia. By 1500 BC it had fallen under the influence of the Central Anatolian Hittite Empire. In the first millennium BC İzmir, then known as Smyrna, ranked as one of the most important cities of the Ionian Federation. During this period, one of the city's most brilliant, it is believed that Homer resided here. Lydian conquest of the the city, around 600 BC, brought this period to an end. İzmir remained little more than a village throughout the Lydian and subsequent sixth century BC Persian rule. In the fourth century BC a new city was built on the slopes of Mt. Pagos (Kadifekale) during the reign of Alexander the Great.
