About Jack Handey and His Deep Thoughts...

Jack Handey was born 25 February 1949 and is an American humorist. He is best known for his Deep Thoughts, a large body of surrealistic one-liner jokes, as well as his "Fuzzy Memories" and "My Big Thick Novel" shorts. Although many people assume otherwise, Handey is a real person, not a pen name or a character.

For those of you that were too young to stay up late and watch SNL in the late eighties and early ninety's Jack Handy was a writer and coproducer of the show. He would write these really great short clips that ran in between the live skits called "Deep Thoughts" by Jack Handey and they were hysterical. I decided to put together this lens as a tribute to the man with wonderful wit.

Jack Handey - A Scarier Skeleton

I was driving home the other day and was flipping through the radio stations and I noticed something that sounded like the unique thoughts of Jack Handey. If you don't know who he is, he wrote many short stories about deep thoughts he has had on Saturday Night Live, and they were usually pretty damn funny. Anyway, I ended up taking down the name of the radio station and found a recording of what I heard on there web site. I then typed it out then threw it into this video that somewhat resembles what they used to do on SNL. Yea I know its kind of shotty, but I did this while attempting to do the least amount of work possible. Hope you like it. The Legend of Toonces the Driving Cat

"He Drives Around, All Over the Town, Toonces the Driving Cat!

Jack Handy also created another hysterical sketch called Toonces the Driving Cat. For all intents and purposes the idea should have bombed at first glance, but for some reason, everyone found it funny as all get out! Below is Wiki's description of Toonces the Driving Cat:

"Toonces, the Driving Cat is a fictional sketch character from the NBC television series Saturday Night Live. Toonces was created by SNL writer Jack Handey.

Toonces was the family pet of Lyle (Steve Martin in the first sketch, thereafter by Dana Carvey) and Brenda Clark (Victoria Jackson), an enthusiastic couple who would allow their cat to drive the family car. At first, they were delighted that their cat had such an ability, but were always horrified to discover (too late) that Toonces was actually not a skilled driver at all. Inevitably, Toonces would drive the car over a cliff whenever he got behind the wheel. This sequence was characterized by someone in the car yelling "Toonces, look out!" with the Toonces puppet appearing to scream also, followed by the car falling off a cliff, and sometimes exploding (as shown in a series of stock footage scenes-sometimes the same one used multiple times within a sketch).

Toonces was portrayed by a live cat (for the title sequence and certain close-up driving scenes) and a puppet. The puppet was made up of three parts. The first part was a head and torso piece, which was a simplistic rendering of a grey and white striped Domestic shorthaired cat. The other two parts consisted of two separate paws, which were manipulated so as to simulate Toonces actually steering the car.

This sketch first appeared on the show that Steve Martin hosted when he broke Buck Henry's record for most hosting stints. It was one of Martin's latest contributions to the pantheon of popular Saturday Night Live characters he would influence.

In 1992, NBC aired a half-hour Toonces special.

On the September 27th 2008 episode of Saturday Night Live, the stock footage of a car going over the cliff was reused in a different sketch. It was edited so that after going over the cliff, the film reversed, the car returned to the cliff top, and then exploded as it landed on the ground."
