The Works of Jack Kirby...

Jack Kirby had a hand in creating some of the most popular comic books of the 20th century. His popularity spans across the Golden, Silver and Modern age of comics.

During the Silver Age: The Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, X-men, Silver Surfer, and Iron Man are just a few of Kirby's most well-know creations while working for Marvel Comics along with Stan Lee. These heroes have gained newfound popularity with the release of several successful movies over the last decade. The Iron Man movie(starring Robert Downey Jr.) looks to continue the trend when it is released in Summer 2008.

During the Modern Age: Kirby also created The Fourth World for DC Comics in the 1970s. He was lured to DC after his great success with Marvel during the 1960's. While the Fourth World characters (Darkseid, Orion, Mr. Miracle, Forever People, The New Gods, The Demon, etc.) and stories do not share the same immense popularity as Kirby's Silver Age Marvel comics, they are gaining newfound love through recently issued collections by DC Comics. These collections (2 have been released to date) can currently be purchased cheaply through Amazon.com and/or your local comic shop. Check them out! You won't be disappointed.

Below I have highlighted the many ways in which Kirby's creations have made there way into modern day popular culture through popular movies, and the collected reprints of his most famous work.

Jack Kirby Biography to be Released February 2008: Written by Mark Evanier

Kirby: King of Comics

Too bad this book isn't available for Christmas, although the quoted release date of February 1, 2008 is not too far off, I suppose.

Mark Evanier was a close friend of Jack Kirby's and the Kirby family, so this book should no doubt contain some unique insights into the life of the "King of Comics".

The book description also notes that this collection will feature "Original pull-out poster art by Alex Ross".

Sweet!

Jack Kirby Interview

This is a clip from a long out-of-print documentary called The Masters Of Comic Book Art. It's introduced by Harlan Ellison. Jack Kirby is seen talking about his cosmic Marvel comics (Galactus, Silver Surfer etc.) and how those led to his Fourth World books at DC. He then says a few words about the history of comics. I never met Jack Kirby, so I don't know if he was always like this, but he has a strange mixture of emotions as he talks: angry and serious but somehow always on the cusp of smiling, too. A fascinating man and an incredible talent.
