Jacob My Love-My Black Capped Caique Parrot

Ranked #3,233 in Pets & Animals, #82,357 overall

My Little Man, Jacob, My Black Capped Caique

Jacob is eleven inches from the tip of his tail to the top of his head. He is a very handsome fellow. And I am crazy about him.

Ours didn't start out as a love affair, We had some real learning curves to deal with. I say "we" just to be kind to myself. But the fact of the matter is. He allowed me to remain in his good graces after I made one mistake after another.

He is a parrot. A wild bird. He is not my baby, my cutie, my toy, my playmate, my friend. He is a bird. It took me two years to learn that. Fortunately I can say today I have mastered the learning curve and my ten fingers and toes and two ear lobes and cheeks, remain intact.

Here is our story of how we became a family.

We Got Jacob When He Was Only Six Months Old.

We got Jacob when he was six months old. The life expectancy for him is 35-40 years. So needless to say I had plenty of time to figure things out.

The first mistake I made was purchasing a parrot without any fore knowledge or experience with birds at all. What I had going for me was my incredible love for all animals.

That's it!

Well I also have strong mental parts, that helped too.

Let me tell you I am grateful I had at least those two qualities because it got me through this learning curve, but I highly recommend you learn all about a bird(actually any animal) before you decide to acquire them. It will save your mind and you will feel better about yourself.

But not me! I wanted him. He was gorgeous and had the personality of a clown. I adored him. So I brought him home. Everything was fine for about a year, then the trouble began.

Flirting With Me

I know this is not the clearest of pictures, but it is good enough you can see his brilliant colors. Also this is a baby picture when he was about 8 months old. He is doing some serious flirting here.

Don't Exclude me!

Parrots are very social
They like to be with their people
If left alone too long they will
become depressed and may start
acting out.

Also if isolated from their chosen human
they will become sick,
and even pull out their chest feathers,
this is called picking and is a sign of
a very sick and very sad bird

Flirting is a Favorite Pastime

One thing about the little black capped caique is they are very flirty. They will stand on one foot and scratch their neck feathers while they turn their heads to the side and look at you sideways. It is a sure thing that they are interested in you as a potential interesting person that they might accept into their lives.

A Great Close Up of My Little Man

Another Shot of Flirting

He enjoys sitting on the cabinet door in the kitchen while I work. He will fly around to investigate if he is hungry. But usually he just wants to be where ever I am.

Wild Birds as Pets or Not

Many people think that parrots and other wild birds should be left in the wild in their natural beautiful habitat. Well I agree with them. But the reality of the world we live in is undeniable. If you have people taking these gorgeous animals out of their worlds, they are not going to be put back. So a good life in a loving home is the next best thing.

Do you think you are human enough to own a wild bird?

No way! I don't care what you say, They should be in the wild!

poddys says:

I am not a big fan of pet birds, I would prefer to see them in the wild, but do love it when they are tame enough to come close to feed. We have a little Robin in the garden that does that, and Blackbirds too.

I hate seeing the poor little things in a pet store though, it's like a slave market, no love shown to them there.

Yes, Better they be with me than in a pet store.

jadehorseshoe says:

Yes.

Traceeshobbies says:

I have many rescued parrots, so in many cases I think they would be better off in the wild. All of the parrots I have are happy and loved and I don't believe they could be any happier or safer or loved more in the wild.

Joan4 says:

I would love to own a bird as beautiful as Jacob! and yes, better me than the pet shop!

aj2008 says:

I do think all birds should be flying free but in this case I am prepared to make an exception!

mulberry says:

I think they should be in the wild optimally, but I agree they're definitely better off in a good home than a pet store or something similar. I know others would disagree heartily with me, but I even cringe at the fact people keep large dogs and cats in their houses or in a crates all of the time. I think they should have animal companions and have a large area to live and roam in. But, we love them. So in the end, yes, love them, keep them, and give them the best you can.

jaye3000 says:

Not a bird, but I do understand the logic in it. The animal probably has a better chance staying with you.

They Are Very Active and Love to Interact With Their Human

The Black Capped Caique is one of the most playful birds God ever created. They must have a lot of toys in their cage and be in a cage big enough for them to really play and climb and roll and jump and hop.

One of Jacob's favorite past times is to tear up stuff. Like cardboard rolls, or sticks from out of the yard, or simply a piece of paper. Jacob will shred and destroy anything he can. I put a lot of leather strap toys in his cage. Tie leather strips into knots, lots of knots. He will work forever until he has those knots untied. Then I will retie them and he will go after it again. Endless fun.

Another cute thing they do is hop. No kidding, Hop!. Jacob will travel across the table hopping after a rolling ball or pencil. Over and over, he never seems to get tired of it.

They are very self entertaining. Playing by the hour. It is important to change up their cage now and then, Get new toys and exchange them for awhile. Also putting them into different spots in the cage. Make him think about it. This not only keeps him entertained and thinking and active, but it helps to control some of his aggression.

These little parrots are extremely confident. They have no idea they are as small as they are. They have short person personality, you know Napoleon complexes. They are simply huge in their eyes.

Showing off!

He is such a little show off. He loves to ham it up. In this position I can hand him small things, like pencils or erasers or beads and he will juggle and play with them and then toss them for ME to play fetch with him... hmmmmm.

They All Look Alike. Really!

Another interesting fact about the black capped caique is that they all look alike. No Kidding, they all look alike!

You can line up 100 people's little birds, all in a row, and you would NOT be able to tell them apart. They are identical. Really!

However, the owner of each one would recognize their parrot. Why?

Because the Parrot would recognize their owner.

And the little guy would not be able to stop flirting with his mama or daddy. Also the owner would recognize the personality of their bird. They are very individual despite looking like all their relatives.

Also you can not tell the gender of the little guys. They actually need DNA testing to determine this. But really who cares.

You can have more than one caique as pets. But you can also have a wonderful relationship with just one at a time. Some people think they need a playmate or they will become lonely. I disagree with this. They are playmates with everything in their world. Since they are masters of the universe they really lack for nothing. Also if you and your caique are each others friend the bond is unbreakable.

Getting Ready to Take Another Plunge!

This is his "bathtub". It is really a cat's water bowl. But it has the thin rimmed sides that he likes to sit on and I discovered one day if I filled it with water he could not resist taking a bath. he makes a huge mess and has a great time.

Staying Warm After a Bath

This is right after he has taken a bath and he is soaked. he loves being cocooned in a towel and will stay there long after he is dry.

Drying Off After Bath

He is very content right after a bath. Usually very docile and loving. He is also hungry. Always looking for a treat. He must feel he has earned it.

This is Jacob After a Bath, Having a Snack

I am sorry about the flash, but I couldn't find another picture that showed him eating, so I included it.

FEED ME

Basically if you eat it

They will eat it!! And love it!

NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!
Give your bird, chocolate or Avacado

It will KILL him!!

Very Pleased With Himself After His Bath

Look at the water beads on the mirror. They are all over the bathroom, He does enjoy his bath.

Scratching His Bill

Here he is again on the kitchen counter door. Taken on the same day. He is about 5 years old here. Scratching is bill is a typical parrot behavior. He rubs his bill up and down really fast in a bouncing action. It must feel good.

They Are Wild Birds After All

There is one thing that you must realize Before you decide to get your own parrot of any kind.

They are Wild Birds!!
They are not parakeets.
They are not finches,
They are not defenseless.
They will Bite

So here is the deal. As I have already said, I got my Jacob when he was just 6 months old. And I was just an infant in knowing how to take care of a parrot.

It was going to be a rocky road. But the love I feel for animals in general and especially for this little guy would prevail but not before I learned some very hard lessons.

First you can not discipline a bird. They are birds! What would you do? spank them? I don't think so. As small as they are they could seriously be injured if you tried to initiate physical discipline. It is ridiculous

However, he can certainly inflict physical punishment on me. And what is worse, I don't even have had to do anything wrong to earn this. He just feels like it.

Jacob has taken a hunk out of my cheek, neck, ear and I have nearly lost a finger more than once. He bites!!! and he bites hard.

He means harm when he bites too. He does not reason that this is my human friend that feeds me and protects me and takes care of me. Oh no, he doesn't reason at all. He just reacts.

"Hey you are doing something that irritates me, even though it didn't irritate me 10 seconds ago. It does now. So I am going to bite you."

And boom he would bite me, painfully, with loss of flesh and a lot of blood and pain.

YIKES!! What have I gotten myself into?

Important Facts to Remember

Parrots are Wild Birds!!
They are not parakeets.
They are not finches,
They are not defenseless.
They will Bite
It will hurt

So What Was I Doing Wrong?

The answer is so simple, but it took me nearly a year to learn it. And let me tell you I am not a demented, slow witted, uneducated or stupid person. Really I am not!

Why was it so difficult? I have owned every kind of animal as a pet throughout my life...Dogs, cats, rabbits, mice, hamsters, gerbils, fish, turtles, frogs, everything!!

I am an expert!!

Do you notice anything different in that list of pets?

That's right, they are pets, domesticated, sweet, intended to be cute and lovable pets.

Parrots are Wild! Wild Birds! They were not intended to be domesticated, Just like a lion, bear, gorilla, or any other wild animal. They may be cute babies, but they grow up.

Jacob was a precious lovable cute baby bird. But he grew up. And unknown to me, A parrot goes through the "terrible twos" just like a human baby, Anywhere from 1 1/2 years to 3 years this phenomena can occur.

Jacob started in at about 11/2 years. I got all that physical punishment because I couldn't allow him to be who he is. I wanted him to remain my cute baby, I wouldn't allow him to be who he was. He rebelled, I took the punishment.

I was so frustrated, I loved him!!

Finally I sought help. I went to some online sights and read and read and read and read. I finally got hooked up with an expert that actually knew what he was talking about and I listened and listened. Finally I learned.

The photos following are trying to show you what to notice about your parrot just before he might give you pain.

Once you learn these signs and warnings, life gets better.

Amazingly enough, he still is my lovable cute baby boy, but on his terms. Now I notice immediately the warning signs, the ruffled neck feathers, the pinpointing pupils, the stance, the forward posturing. And I stop playing with him, or get him off my shoulder, or put him down, or get him back into his cage. Let him get over whatever imagined threat he is dealing with and when he is ready, we can play again.

Notice ... WHEN HE IS READY It is NEVER on my terms, It is ALWAYS on his terms.

This was the part that was tough to learn. I just couldn't believe that he wouldn't become domesticated, that he wouldn't bond with me the way I felt about him.

HE WILL NOT!!

If you can learn this and accept it, you may be ready to own a parrot. But please do not even consider it, until you read this lens a dozen times. And you can accept this one very important fact...

The parrot is a WILD BIRD!

Very Direct Eye Contact. Getting Ready to Strike!

Can you see how he is looking directly at you? And notice the feathers on his back are ruffled and not smooth. And of course, you can't see it, but the pupils of his eyes are pinpoint. He is ready to take me on, Teach me a lesson. If I would allow it, he would give me a good bite. This was the toughest lesson to learn for me

Stalking Me!! Watch Out!

It is very difficult to take pictures of an animal in motion. But I was trying to capture him in a stalking mode. This is just before he is going to strike. This is dangerous!! He is moving quickly back and forth, foot to foot with a direct bead on me. He is going to attack! So I was a little intimidated to worry to much about the shot. I was pleased it came out at all.

Even though it looks like his pupils are large, When there is imminent danger, they will quickly go from pinpoint to large to pinpoint, over and over. rapidly. I just caught it at this stage. Trust me, He means business!

This Is A Happy Bird, No Danger Now

This is how he is 90% of the time. He is relaxed, giving me sideways glances. Pupils nice and big and usually on one foot to scratch his rough. This is the desired way to have your parrot behave.

What Jacob Loves to Eat

You might think a parrot would eat some seeds, like a parakeet. But you would be very wrong and your parrot would become very sick. I can speak about parrots in general because although Jacob is small he is still a parrot. And the fact of the matter is, they love food!!

All kinds of food, the more variety the more healthy your parrot will be.

Jacob's favorite foods are french fries, cooked hamburger meat, steak, corn on the cob, broccoli, peanut butter, pizza, ice cream, walnuts, yogurt pretzels, any kind of cookies and popcorn to name just a few. He also has a variety of nuts, berries and seed just to round it out.

All birds including parrots should NEVER be given chocolate or Avacado. It will kill them.

Basically if you eat it, they can and will eat it.

When I fix a meal for Jim and I, I will just make a small plate for Jacob and set it in his cage, otherwise if allowed out he would get into our plates, also if not included he will scream the entire meal.. So for all of our sakes, we all just eat the same stuff at the same time.

I put a dish of diced up apples and oranges and lemons in his cage at all times. And bowls of cereal, all kinds of cereal. He loves fruit loops (or maybe the bright colors) and Cheerios, and sugar pops, Healthy cereal and trashy sugar cereal, He just loves cereal. So bowls of cereal are in his cage at all times. And of course fresh water,

Do not be surprised if he bathes in his water bowl. He likes to bathe when he wants to bathe. Sometimes in his bath bowl as in the pictures shown, and sometimes in his water bowl. Really does it matter? He is happy.

So it is not hard to feed a parrot. Lots of variety and always fresh, and include him with the family.

What Are is Favorite Pastimes?

He loves to play in live plants. He hides in the foliage. He picks leaves. He swings on the branches. It is wonderful to have a tree like plant for them to play on.

They also love to destroy things they can shred. Like a twig from out in the yard, or card board rolls.

They love little thumb sized objects they can hold in their feet, Like bells, or balls or things with a handle on them like a leather strap. If they can hold it, they will play with it.

And they love color, the more brightly colored the toy, the more they will play with it.

And believe it or not, they have favorite colors and colors they don't like. My Jacob loves red, but will have nothing to do with anything yellow.

Into My Plant. Very Natural Habitat.

He would live in this plant if I would allow it. But he would remove every leaf on it. So he only visits once in awhile with supervision.

Here is Another Shot of Flirting

Here he is looking very fine. He is 9 years old. (2009) Still very much a youngster.

You will be ready to own your own Parrot When...

You understand and accept they are wild birds and that will never change no matter how cute they are.

You must allow them to be as God intended, Wild!

They will be wonderful with you and give you more than you ask for if you learn to live in their world.

They will NOT learn to live in yours.
