Up Near The North Rim of The Grand Canyon, in the tall cool pine trees, a campground makes it's home. Open to the public only in the summer due to the amount of snow durning the winter. I was lucky to be the "Meet and Greet" Camp Host. I expected a large variety of animals to enjoy being so far away from any big city and high into the big tall trees.
During our stay we did see a couple different kinds of birds, a couple of deer in the night shadows, a very unusual looking lizard. Once a big squirrel with a huge, bushy white tail with highlights of brown and white tuffs on it's ears, zip across the campground road.
A very large community of mice seemed to come out at night while I was doing my 10 pm round. As soon as the beam from my golf cart hit the curves on the road it was like Los Angles traffic on warp speed. We have never seen so much action. Some seem to think they were at Indy raceway keeping up with the cart and even passing it!
During the daytime, we rarely seen a one!
The campground was named after a Lake, "Jacob Lake", but there was no Lake! Of course the first question of every camper was "Where Is The Lake?" I had to come up with different and unusual answers to this question to entertain myself and campers.
Some people brought their boats, jet ski, rafts, canones and many families with all their water toys. They, like us, were a little taken back that there was no lake!
Other Camp Host's did not like to be up at the front of the campground entrance, as the "Meet and Greet" person due to this. They were frustrated in answering the same question over and over. I did not mind this, it gave my mind more ways to come up with different ways to answer the question. I did suggest to the other Camp Hosts, to write the 10 most asked questions on the "Check In" board and tell the campers to refer to number one! They did not think this was funny or a good salution. So I was very happy to keep the "Meet and Greet" spot which no one wanting it!
Due to no lake, there was hardly any water up at the campground. We were around 7,000 feet and durning the winter it snowed. Once the snow melted the water was gone. But every puddle of melted snow, someone posted a sign, naming it a lake. The whole moutain had to truck the water in for people's use. I think this was really the main reason there were not many different kind of animals there.
With such a large population of mice, they learned very quickly to seek water from the sewer hoses of the trailers and RVs.
After the first week we were there, I noticed holes in my sewer hose. Thinking it might be old I went to town, about 50 miles away and brought another one. A couple of days later I noticed holes again. Now I knew it was not my "old hose" but something eating it. I went to town again and brought another one but did not leave it out on the ground. When I used it to dump the tanks I put it back in the trailer cabinet. The old saying, "Trick Me Once, Shame On You, Trick Me Twice, Shame On Me! Trick Me 3 Times, I Deserve It!"
I also learned to put a couple of little buckets and bowls with rocks for stepping stones so the mice had little pools to keep them out of the trailer. They seem to love their little resort and mostly stayed out of our trailer!
Some Camp Hosts prop their hoods of their vehicles up with wood. I asked them why? They seem to think by doing this it would keep the mice from making their homes among all their wires. Some of the vehicles had hood lamps and it would drain their batteries. But they thought it was easier to set a charger on the batteries than to have the wires replaced. I shugged my shoulders at this home remedy.
Jacob The Mouse Adventure Chapter 2
Coming from our campground where it may hit the middle 70's during the hottest part of the day, it was quite a shocker to hit the 120 degrees with sky high humidity. But it was a fast down hill, scenic drive.
As I was driving, I noticed what looked like a thin stick sticking out of the hood joint, near the windshield. After a few minutes it disappeared. Maybe I slowed down and it sucked down into the engine area.
A few miles down the road it came back up in a different place in the joint. I thought to myself, "all the twisting and turns must have moved it over a little". Then it disappeared again.
The air was very spring like coming down the road, but warming up as each mile we passed. We opened up our windows to feel the air brushing our faces. All of a sudden we saw a mouse wiggle it's way up through the joint and looked right at us through the windshield!
Both my wife and I could not believe this and I looked down at the speed I was going at. 75 miles an hour! Jacob the mouse decided to walk across a few feet and then disppeared down the joint of the hood in a different place.
A couple of miles down the road he surfaced again and took another stoll toward my wife's side of the windshield. She panicked and rolled up her window thinking the wind might blow Jacob right into her face!
But Jacob continued this pattern all the way to the campground.
Once we arrived at the campground we slowed down to around 10 miles per hour. This gave Jacob the Mouse a great idea to come out and explore the whole hood of the truck. His Big Mistake!
He started to wander down the middle of the hood, very slowly. Stopping off and on, looking back at us through the windshield.
Finally when he was 3/4 down the hood, I slammed on the breaks. Like a sufer, he held his stand on his 2 back legs as he slid right off the hood and landed on the asphalt!
As we drove off, I looked back in my rearview mirror and Jacob the Mouse was standing on his back legs, stretching as tall as he could toward the sky. And it seem to me he had his shoulders shrugged and front 2 legs up, like saying "What, you leaving me here?" or "Where am I?"
It might seem mean, but I think he was now in a new place to make new friends and maybe a new love!
