Jan Brady's Wig: Retro TV show sitcoms that had 'hairy' episodes
Ranked #2,423 in Movies & TV, #64,640 overall
Jan Brady gets to the root of her self esteem issues after a famous wig-out.
There were a lot of troublesome toupees and hopeless haircuts that made them want to curl up and dye. But don't flip your wig! These hairy situations were the stuff of classic tv plots.
This is the first in a series of articles. We'll be looking at episodes of retro tv shows where hair was somehow a big component in their storylines. On a regular basis, I'll feature a different show, often a US sitcom from the 1950s-1970s. Sometimes there'll be an overall theme including more than one show. We plan to have a new lens in this series up each Friday.
Information, including spoiler plot outlines come from various sources & will be as accurate as possible. A show photo will be included if possible. The first one we'll remember The Brady Bunch. Middle sister, Jan struggled to find her place in the family and once she thought that wearing a curly dark wig might help.
Please visit the Tuesday Flashback Feature series that's going in my blog. These are posted weekly and deal with retro tv shows that somehow deal with jewelry or gemstones. I sell jewelry on Etsy.
The second installment in this series is about Cousin Itt's visit to The Addams Family.
Will the Real Jan Brady Please Stand Up?
The Brady Bunch - January 15, 1971
While she believed that she'd be a hit at the party in her new wig, she's met with laughing and mean comments, and she leaves. The kids go to her house and apologize afterward and Jan is happy once more. This lens will be edited as often as needed when new info becomes available.
I'm always interested to hear your memories and in the interest of supporting fellow artists, I'll also be featuring a few Etsy shops where the pieces tie into the general theme of the featured story.

Jan Brady Wiki
Brady Bunch famous middle daughter
Jan Brady (née Jan Martin, later Jan Brady-Covington) is the middle Brady daughter and was portrayed by Eve Plumb. Storylines which involve Jan often feature her jealousy of her seemingly more popular older sister Marcia, or her awkward position as the middle child. In addition, Jan is insecure about having freckles and wearing glasses, embarrassed about the fact she does not have a boyfriend (even inventing a fictional one named "George Glass"), and concerned about her future appearance. A typical plot line surrounding Jan would feature her attempting to carve out her niche in the family, or make a name for herself at school. Once, in exasperation at her supposed inferiority to Marcia, she uttered the now famous catch phrase, "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" which was later parodied in the Brady Bunch movie and in a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch.
As a young teen, Jan had a striking resemblance to her Great-Aunt Jenny (played by Imogene Coca) in her younger days. Jan is also occasionally absent-minded, once losing the tube containing her father's architectural plans while visiting King's Island amusement park in Cincinnati. In her later high school years, Jan found she had a talent for painting (as does Eve Plumb), which likely led to her career choice as an architect, following in her father's footsteps (as shown in later reunion films).
In The Brady Girls Get Married Jan marries Phillip Covington. The two met in college (he was her professor). The Covingtons briefly separate in A Very Brady Christmas, but reconcile. However, they are unable to conceive their own children and in The Bradys adopt a Korean girl named Patty.

Season 2 Episode 40: Tired of being the middle blond girl of the family, Jan tries to alter her appearance by buying a black wig, which she intends to wear to Lucy's upcoming birthday party. Meanwhile, Peter is horrified that Margie will be attending the party, a girl who has a major crush on him.
