Set in pre-Victorian England, Persuasion tells the story of Anne Elliot, who now having lost her "bloom of youth" is suddenly re-united with the dashing Captain Frederick Wentworth whose advances she had refused some seven years earlier. In the time that they were apart he has gained both connections and fortune in the Napoleonic Wars. Anne regrets that her neighbor, the meddling Lady Russell once persuaded her to refuse his proposal of marriage. Anne finds herself in turmoil as she watches Fredrick woo the young Louisa Musgrove, and suffers terribly while he appears to have forgotten entirely his earlier attraction to her. Manners and good breeding often thwart her strong desire to tell her true feelings, but his true emotions are also maked as he reflects on the pain of once having lost her.
