I catch them in my hands and shake them to keep them confused. I then feed them to my chickens. They love them.

Thanks for the warning about the beetle traps. I definitely DO NOT want to attract more beetles to my garden. Great informative site.

3 years ago I had a terrible Japanese beetle problem, they ate my roses, my Japanese Maple, and generally used my yard for a big bug orgy every summer. Then I put up a bird feeder. I always hated starlings, but the little darlings ate all the bugs, with help from a pair of cardinals. I have been beetle free for two years now! Robins and cardinals eat the grubs, cardinals and starlings eat the adults. Put up a feeder and put out an ear of corn for the starlings, mounted on a nail. You won't be sorry.

My favorite way to rid roses of the dreaded Japanese beetle is the soapy water in the bucket method. Works every time me! I'll mention your informative site on my Easy Care Roses lens. Nicely done!

I use a spray bottles full of soapy water and spray the plants in the morning or in the evening
it kills the bettels ,they don't like the taste of the plants after you spray, you can spray the whole plant and it won't hurt roses.

You know dear I like Japanese Beetles. My yard is full of these. We have been trying and trying to get rid of them but it seems impossible. We will try your methods and hopefully that will take care of them.
  • KimGiancaterino Nov 7, 2009 @ 2:37 pm | delete
My garden is pesticide free, so I count on bigger bugs to take care of the smaller bugs. Soapy water in a spray bottle comes in handy once in awhile, though. Great lens... Squid Angel Blessed.

Japanese Beetles. My property has more than it's share and I can't possibly control them all. Here are some things I've learned.
The smell of the decaying beetles in traps does not deter other beetles but, instead lures them. It also lures wasps looking for protein.
No need for a net to capture JB's. Hold your bucket under the beetles and disturb them. You'll find that JB's always "drop" to take off and end up landing in your bucket. Almost 100% effective.
Commercial traps are, as you say, actually lures for more beetles. Buy them for your neighbors, but don't put any in your property.
JB's can travel several miles when necessary. Although milkey spore is very effective, you will need to have all your neighbors apply the spore so that a large area has been rendered safe. Ultimately, the beetles will return when teh habitat is right.

I have modified the tanglefoot Japanese Beetle expandable traps... you may see the series on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix9GHjmsAno

Recycling is my thing and beetles are no different... they are fed to my poultry!

Also check out my High Capture- Low Delivery beetle trap setup.. it out collects the lower traps 3 to 1 very inexpensive and easy to do.
  • joan Apr 17, 2009 @ 12:20 pm | delete
We were invested with japenese beetles and tried the traps but as someone blurbed....we were luring the whole neighborhood beetles!

MILKEY SPORE REALLY WORKS . IT IS EXPENSIVE BUT WELL WORTH IT AND IT LASTS FOR 10 YEARS!

Thanks for the great idea. I had heard that the traps were good at attracting even more beetles to your yard and having been near a few I can attest to the horrid stench of dead beetles.

I'll be trying this out tomorrow. :)

Thanks for the blog . . . having a huge JB problem right now. We plan to use Milky Spore but I have also read about the soapy water. I've read that JB are attracted to a yellow bucket with soapy water in it . . . no need to catch them. Do you think this might work as well?
  • pathfinder027 Jul 7, 2008 @ 10:29 am | delete
I learned the soapy water technique from my grown daughter, who loves flower gardening. I go out to the garden several times a day with a small plastic tub from "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" and I sneak up on the beetles on my pole beans and raspberriy bushes. I hold the small butter bowl under the leaves and knock the beetles off into the soapy water. I miss one once in a while, but I get most of them. I dump them daily and use the water for a couple more days.

I USE MALATHION PER DIRECTIONS ON BOTTLE TO KILL JAPANESE BEETLES AND OTHER PESTS. I USE MALATHION ON FRUIT TREES, VEGETABLES, ALL PLANTS.
IT IS CHEAP AND WORKS. TRAPS WORKS BUT YOU ALSO INVITE EVERY JAPANESE BEETLE A MILE AWAY TO YOUR YARD.

The smell of dead beetles will deter them. A friend of mine that used to work on an organic farm said they would kill some beetles by hand throw them in a blender with some water, strain the concoction and spray it on the plants. I haven't tried it yet...if you do I suggest using an old blender that you don't use for anything else.
  • John H Apr 10, 2008 @ 9:59 am | delete
    You stated:
"I have used the traps. They work great. But after a few days in the sun the bugs start to decay. The smell is ripe. I've read where the smell may actuallly repel the Japanses Beetles."

If the smell actually repels the beetles, why not leave it up, or leave dead beetles around the roses?

My dad has a glass jar he goes out and plucks Japanese Beetles by hand several times a week. He keeps the jar until it is full. It reeks. I use the soap bucket method, my son loves to help. He loves anything creepy crawly.
