Jarome Iginla: Big Time Hockey In Calgary
Jarome Iginla is a proven goal scorer with the Calgary club having scored over 400 goals in his 13 seasons in the National Hockey League. Maybe 2 or 3 more years and the rawboned rookie of the 1996-97 season will take his place as a 500 goal man.
This year, Iginla should hit his 1000th career NHL game. And he is fast approaching another career highlight as he should score his 900th career point this season.
What's next for Jarome? A Stanley Cup this year would be nice. Iginla and the Flames look like they are going to take a serious run for Lord Stanley's Mug this year.

Iginla Was Drafted By The Dallas Stars? What Happened There?
1995 NHL Entry Draft
Yep, Jarome Iginla was originally drafted (first round, 11th overall) by the Dallas Stars. Below is a list of the players chosen prior to Iginla. Jarome Iginla had been a standout for the Western Hockey League's Kamloops Blazers, playing 183 games and scoring 102 goals, while contributing 134 assists for 236 points. It was in his final year with the Blazers when Iginla really started to show that he had the goods, scoring 63 goals, 73 assists for 136 points in only 63 regular season games, but in the WHL playoffs, he scored 16 goals and had 13 assists for 29 points in 16 playoff games.
So how did Jarome Iginla become a Calgary Flame? In December 1995 he was traded from the Dallas Stars along with Corey Millen to the Calgary Flames for future Hall of Famer, Joe Nieuwendyk who helped the Stars win the Stanley Cup in 1998-99.
1995 NHL Entry Draft (1-11)
1 Ottawa - Bryan Berard
2 NY Islanders - Wade Redden
3 Los Angeles - Aki-Petteri Berg
4 Anaheim - Chad Kilger
5 Tampa Bay - Daymond Langkow
6 Edmonton - Steve Kelly
7 Winnipeg - Shane Doan
8 Montreal - Terry Ryan
9 Boston - Kyle McLaren
10 Florida - Radek Dvorak
11 Dallas - Jarome Iginla
Several of the players chosen ahead of Iginla are still playing in the NHL, Shane Doan has been particularly solid, having 10 straight 20-plus goal seasons and has been with the Phoenix Coyotes since the franchise moved from Winnipeg in 1996.
Following the '95 draft, Iginla rejoined the Kamloops Blazers but did get the call up to the big leagues when Calgary Flames used him in 2 playoff games in the 1995-96 Stanley Cup playoffs. Iginla recorded 2 points in his first 2 NHL games, his first career goal and an assist.
When training camp rolled around for the 1996-97 season, Iginla stuck with the Flames, and played in all 82 regular season games, while getting 21 goals, 29 assists for 50 points. Unfortunately there would be no playoffs for the Flames that year (actually, the team missed the playoffs for 7 years!) and Iginla wouldn't be able to make a run for Cup until 2003-04. Since then, the Flames haven't missed the playoffs.

The Sensational Jarome Iginla
(Hockey Canada)

Fans, media, and NHL players alike have acclaimed Jarome Iginla worldwide, but his rise to greatness was slow and methodical, not meteoric.
This lively biography covers his life and career, from the low moments to the high points. The latter include the moment he scored the crucial goals that helped Canada beat the U.S. in the Olympics; being named the Lester B. Pearson Award winner; and his status as hockey's most appealing ambassador.
Iginla was named captain of the Calgary Flames in 2003, making him only the second player of African descent to be named captain of an NHL team. Author Peter Bailey's lively style captures Iginla as both a charming, unpretentious man as well as a master player.
