Basquiat - the Radiant Child who painted the world alive

"I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life." Jean-Michel Basquiat

Basquiat was an American painter, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1960. He started by painting graffiti in the City as well as forming a band 'Grey', that performed at the CBGB during the late 70's. He started to gain recognition as a painter in 1980, when he participated The Times Square Show. Following this he featured in an article in Artforum titled "The Radiant Child". In 1982 Basquiat became friends with Andy Warhol. These two artists collaborated extensively in the 80's, influencing each others' work. in 1985 Basquiat appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. He died untimely in 1988.

In their shear physicality and expressivity beyond expressionism the paintings of Basquiat have always been among my favourites when thinking about contemporary painting. Although from a completely different stratum, they speak to me with the same voice as the paintings of Mark Rothko. They re-awaken the innermost, with the pure joy of being alive and kicking!
