Jeanne Guyon - Experiencing The Depths Of Jesus Christ

This little book, by Jeanne Guyon, written in plain English has done more for me than any other book on the spiritual search for Christ.

I knew the book was right for me as soon as I started reading it. It's relatively brief, easy to read, and its to the point style of writing is well suited to me.

It is rightly hailed as a Christian classic, and the author was indeed an amazing and gifted lady. I recommend Jeanne Guyon's book to all who are seeking a closer communion with Christ.

A Classic of Christian Spiritual Writing

Jeanne Guyon

A Christian classic which will change your life, as it has done mine, but beware, it will challenge you as well. As it does so, my advice is to stick with it. Once you give yourself to God, you will find, as the author makes clear, there is no going back. If this sounds a bit scary, rest assured, you won't regret it. The change is simply learning to rely on God rather than yourself.

Experiencing The Depths Of Jesus Christ, by Jeanne Guyon is easy to read, in the SeedSowers edition. It makes good sense, and as I read the scriptures I sometimes think "ah yes, that's what Jeanne Guyon's book says as well." For example: the bible tells us to draw near to God, so does this book......

All the Christian spiritual classics are worth reading but not all are as easy to understand as this one, written in modern English.

If you want to make spiritual progress in your search for Christ, this is the book to read.

Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back by Todd Burpo

I read the Kindle edition of this book after it was recommended to me by a fellow church goer. I had recently purchased the Amazon Kindle so it was a good time to try reading some ebooks with it and I started with the book by Todd Burpo.

Has some quite astonishing revelations by a young boy who actually saw Jesus. What I got from this book is that Jesus is watching us and holding us all the time but we can't see Him He sees us, and that's reassuring.

We also get to know what Jesus actually looks like, for real. If you want to know too, read the book. Ever since I read that book I have a mental image of Christ, as He is actually portrayed in the life like drawing, see the book for the source of this life like image.

A Short and Easy Method of Prayer by Jeanne Guyon

Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ was originally entitled "Short and Very Easy Method of Prayer", and the edition I refer to in this lens is a version published by The SeedSowers in modern language.

Why is this book so special ?

Experiencing The Depths Of Jesus Christ

If you are an avid reader of the bible, as I am, you will no doubt be familiar with St Paul's instruction to us to "pray without ceasing". This is something I would love to be able to do, and this book has helped me in some way toward achieving it, and of enabling me to have a closer and continuous awareness of Christ.

If you interpret the bible literally, you will appreciate that it isn't at all easy to pray continuously.

Jeanne Guyon's approach, in Experiencing The Depths of Jesus Christ, is to guide the reader towards turning inwards to the spirit, and their finding Christ. The author then takes the reader through various levels of experiencing Christ.

You start by putting yourself in the presence of God and you do this by turning inward to your spirit, and there you will meet God. You only need to believe He lives in you, for you to be in His presence.

At the time the book was written, in the 17th. century, not everyone could read. Those who couldn't were taught to seek God within, which comes from the Gospel of St Luke chapter 17:21 which says the "kingdom of God is within you." It was then the Christians task to find God within, by adopting the approach mentioned above, ie. turning inwards to the indwelling spirit.

One useful way to do this, as stated in the book, is to ask Christ to teach us to pray. So we pray the Lord's Prayer, pausing when we feel prompted to. At the same time we can open our hearts to God, or, simply stated, give Him our concerns.

We can then progress in our deepening relationship with Christ, by abandoning our lives to Him, and turning all our attention to Him and away from ourselves. A progression which will no doubt vary in length for each individual.

Eventually we become absorbed in Him alone, which is where we were always meant to be, and would have been, but for the sin of Adam, and our subsequent separation from God.

I recommend this book to all who want to find Christ.
