Baby Clothes for Jewish Holidays

Ranked #11,893 in Entertainment, #146,109 overall

I joined the crowds of sappy mothers who rushed out and bought the little "Baby's First Halloween" and "Baby's First Thanksgiving" onesies for my son, and I noticed a glaring omission in all the stores . . . there were tons of "Baby's 1st Easter" and "My First Christmas" but the major stores don't carry a single onesie or T-shirt for major Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover.

I am committed to truly honoring religious and cultural diversity. I have an online store at www.littlecharacters.net. Little Characters prints my drawings on baby T-shirts, onesies, and bibs. The Holidays sections in my store have lots of my original designs for the major holidays of eastern and western religions, and I have worked especially hard to create a nice sized collection of clothing designs for the Jewish calendar.

Other artists and business people have already been trying to create beautiful clothes for infants and toddlers to be included in Jewish holidays, and I want to acknowledge them, too.

Let's stop this "Christian Baby by default" kind of mentality. Jewish families have just as much right to dress their little ones up in sappy outfits for pictures or to get aunts and friends to cluck, "Aaaawwww!"

Readers: What do you think?

Growing up in a minority religion, I got used to people constantly assuming that a big part of my identity just didn't count or was so obviously inferior it wasn't worth acknowledging. Now that I have a business of my own (albeit it a tiny one), I am committed to putting a lot of work into honoring many religions and helping people feel as though they can share that essential part of themselves with others. Religion and cultural identity take on new importance when people become parents, and inclusive baby clothes give those new parents a chance to celebrate who they are. It is true that I would like to make a profit off of my designs, but if I divided my total profits so far by the number of hours I work at this, my hourly wage would be absolutely pitiful.

Honestly, what matters more to me is that I can look at the designs I drew and feel proud of them. And when I know that a mother or father is able to gush over their child in an outfit in a way they would not have been able to if not for me . . . well that does make me proud.

Should there be more marketing targetting Jewish parents?

Create products with Jewish parents in mind. They shouldn't be treated like they're invisible.

Thanks for showing one of my designs (the Shavuot design) -- I have tons more Jewish themed designs (my Jewish designs are what started my store) -- I started my stores (http://www.cafepress.com/compugraphd2 ,
http://tinyurl.com/compugraphddesigns and http://www.printfection.com/compugraphd ) -- I have many baby products and designs for many Jewish holidays and other Jewish themes.

Love the lens, BTW. And, personally, I appreciate non-Jews thinking of us (favorably) and designing with us in mind.

One of the great things about the internet is that there is no reason not to go into niche marketing. I like having the opportunity to buy non-religious Jewish items for the Jewish kids in my life.

ShopaholicChick says:

i don't know how i would target marketing to only jewish parents only unless i write it in herbrew...but i do make jewish designs...just like other people make christian designs

I do have a jewish shop on cafepress JewcyDesigns - as for the "money-making schemes" - it is not a scheme....do you really think every person in asia and other 3rd world countries that produce many of our consumer goods - employ only christians to cut sew print create or make crosses, stuffed reindeer, santa claus tshirts and other christian goods?? It is just a good business decision to follower the buyers then make what they want - and good business is something many people will tell you Jews are all about!! (just making fun of the stereotype not the Jewish businessmen themselves)

and who is to say what is "another group's holiday" - my great grandmother was jewish...my mother is episcopal - father is catholic - one of my best friends is muslim - college roommate was hindi....don't even ask what I am that's a whole other story!!

Remember if you are a Jewish mom/dad looking for cute Jewish designs for your kids - my bet is your not the only one!!

Don't try to profit from another religious group's holidays. They're supposed to be spiritual not money-making schemes.

Online communities for Jewish Moms and Dads

Modern Jewish Moms Social Network
A great forum with more specialized groups within the community of Jewish parents - like "Single Moms" and "Kvetching".
Jewish Families Group on Babycenter
I really like Babycenter in general. It has a lot of helpful information for whatever stage of parenting you're in. I've spent a fair bit of time in these groups, and it really helps to be able to vent to people who can empathize.
Jewish Moms Group on CafeMom
I haven't spent as much time on CafeMom personally, but this group seems quite large, so I imagine that there are more interesting posts to read and you'd have more varied perspectives.

I just wanted to mention -- in re: your discussion about Christians marketing to Jews -- there's an old Jewish joke about Jewish merchants selling in the lower East Side of NY -- They have a shop right off Delancey Street (as in the movie "Crossing Delancey") and they start to notice the community changed and it's not so Jewish anymore. So they decide they are going to start carrying crosses. So the partner who has less of a Yiddish accent calls the distributor and, in his best standard Northeast US accent says, "we would like to order a gross of the silver crucifixes and a gross of the gold-plated crucifixes." -- There's a pause on the other end of the phone. "Is that mit the Yushkies or mit-out the Yushkies?" (is that with the Jesus or without the Jesus?") comes a thick Yiddish accent.

IOW, there's a long history of people selling to other faiths. :-)
