John Carlton and Me
In 1990, I worked as a copywriter at Gary Halbert's "Seminar by the Sea" in Key West, writing sales letters for Gary's clients. I was a novice. Anything I did had to be approved by John Carlton. Oh. My. God! I learned for the first time that you must have a very good reason for every word you put on paper. As John critiqued my writing, after every sentence he would ask, "So what?" ... meaning that sentence could be tossed out and the piece would lose nothing. It was a humbling experience ... but outstanding instruction.
