The Jonas Brothers with Spotlight on Nick Jonas

A normal male teen has enough to go through with school, girls, homework, sports, changing hormones, lots of acne, and just growing up and becoming a young man. Nick Jonas has to deal with being a member of a band that every young female teen in the world would love to see in concert. He also has to complete his school work, even if he is home-schooled. He plays in the band with two other members, Joe and Kevin. Brother Kevin, age 21, was recently engaged to 22 year old, long time friend, Danielle Deleasa. Nick not only has to deal with all these things, he also has to deal with diabetes.

Together, the Jonas Brothers are one of the most popular teen bands around. When Nick was 13, he was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. He wears an OmniPod insulin pump to help him manage his diabetes. Diabetes is a grwoing problem, especially in America. There are many solutions and help for children with diabetes. Nick lives with it daily and manages his life and his diabetes.

Nick deals with his diabetes daily.

Nick Jonas was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on November 16, 2005. Since August 6, 2008, Bayer Diabetes Care has partnered with Nick Jonas as a diabetes ambassador to promote the idea for young people to manage their diabetes, as Nick was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 13.

Nick decides to tell the world he has Type I Diabetes

When Nick was first diagnosed with Diabetes he had all the symptoms of a diabetic. The doctor knew what Nick had when he said he was tired, grouchy, losing weight and thirsty all the time. His first blood sugar test was 700. A normal person without diabetes usually has a blood sugar level around 80 to 90.

Nick had to learn to deal with his diabetes and at first used insulin that he administered himself. That wasn't working out so he now uses an OmniPod that helps him automatically regulate his blood sugar levels by pumping insulin as needed to keep his blood sugars level in line.

Nick Jonas is also known as "Mr. Positive"

If you get diabetes or already have it, stay positive.

In 2007, while the Jonas Brothers performed at a Diabetes Research Institute fundraiser in New York City, Nick asked those in the crowd to raise their hands if they had diabetes. Then he raised his hand, too, revealing for the first time in public that he had type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes. The crowd went wild. He even pulled up his T-shirt sleeve to show the audience the device he wears on his arm to deliver insulin to his body.

What is insulin? People who have diabetes have a problem with a hormone called insulin. Their bodies either don't make enough insulin or the insulin doesn't work as it should. Without insulin, your body can't get the fuel it needs. You have to help your body by supplying the insulin from the outside.

At the concert, Nick encouraged other kids with diabetes to be positive. He added that he earned the nickname "Mr. Positive" because of his attitude about his diabetes.

What exactly is Type I Diabetes?

Nick has diabetes, but what is it?

Type I Diabetes is found mainly in people younger than 30 years old and requires a regular injection of insulin.

In people with Type 2 diabetes, the body is able to produce insulin, and in fact sometimes it is overproduced, but is unable to use it properly. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled with a proper diet and medication.

Many foods that are consumed in the United States have high levels of fat, carbohydrates and proteins. Eating a lot of these types of foods such as cheeseburgers, French fries, cookies, candies, and soda, all lead to weight gain. This extra weight constrains your pancreas.

The pancreas is the part of the body that secretes insulin needed to reduce sugar levels in the body. After awhile, the pancreas just can't do it anymore. As the pancreas slowly stop working, you can develop pre-diabetes. Then the pancreas reach a point where they can't produce any insulin so that can't break down the sugar, or glucose, in the blood. This leads to increasing sugar levels in the body. The chronic health condition where the pancreas can't breakdown the sugar and there are high levels of sugar in the blood is known as Diabetes.

Diabetes, uncontrolled can kill. Constant high blood sugar levels can damage various parts of the body including the kidneys, eyes and heart. Early detection and treatment in children is essential.
