Joslin Diabetes

The Joslin Diabetes Center is the largest diabetes research center, provider of education and diabetes clinic in the world.

The Joslin center was founded in 1898 in Boston, Massachusetts by famous specialist Elliott P. Joslin. Joslin believed that the key to managing diabetes was empowerment, patient involvement and education. The center has helped revolutionize things such as treatments to reduce amputations, saving the lives of babies born to women who are diagnosed, and discovering sight saving surgeries. The center employs as many as 300 researchers and 40 faculty level investigators.

The Joslin center currently treats over 23,000 patients. Specialty care at the facility ranges all the way from eyes and kidneys, to hearts and feet. The sole focus of the center is diabetes staffed with the largest number of Certified Diabetes Educators anywhere in the world.

Just in 2006, researchers found that specific genes can determine body fat distribution as well as obesity in humans. The Joslin center is at the forefront of diabetes care and continues to treat and educate patients in attempts to end the long struggle with this horrible disease. Getting recognition and winning awards from the Institute of Medicine, The National Academy of Sciences and and the American Diabetes Association has kept Joslin on top and surpassing all other treatment facilities.

Joslin has twenty-five affiliates in the United States and even two nationally; such big names as The Children's Hospital of Boston and Harvard Medical School. The center hosts multiple special events and fund raisers each year, including golf tournaments and even have a camp to help teach children to manage their diabetes

The annual Teddy Bear clinic is big amongst the younger children who are suffering. The children bring their bears to be examined and get educated on how to live a healthy lifestyle. Support groups are also readily available at the clinics, if the patients feel like they need to reach out to others who are suffering. Young kids are not only the focus, teens have a place too. Discussion boards are available on the website if teens want a safe place to talk. The parents have a discussion board on the site for them as well.
