Popular Instrument Method Books That School Band Directors Like & Use
My 1st Choice: I prefer the Rubank series because it is extremely thorough in technique and basic skills that everyone needs to learn. The series has been used for decades by music educators. All the lesson books come in four levels ~ Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced I, and Advanced II. Most of my students do the first three, then move on to etude books, scales, and solos. This series is fantastic! Anyone who works hard through it will have an excellent background for playing. Students who have worked through it have done very well in performances, auditions, and more. Notice I said 'work' - the series is harder than most other lesson book series and does require dedicated practice to achieve. It does not have any modern or popular songs. It is definitely more classical based - mostly etudes, scales, famous classical solos and duets, etcetera - but is a great springboard to playing all styles of music. Since it is a little more dry, I like to have students work on other materials at the same time ~ solos in a variety of styles, duet and ensemble pieces, their band or orchestra music, and whatever else they like! :)
Student Favorite: The Sueta Band Method is a series I have used for young beginners until they are ready to play the Rubank series. There are three levels in the series. The books contain introducing notes and fingerings, reading musical pitches and rhythmic values, scale exercises, rhythmic patterns to count, and a variety of plain "fun" songs. My concern with the series is in the clarinet book 1 where students are expected to make the jump over the break instantly. Some kids are fine doing it right away, but many others, simply because of the physical size of their fingers, are unable to make a quick jump and therefore get very frustrated. Depending on the student, I add pages in between to try to make it more gradual for the kids while their fingers are getting stronger.
School Band Methods: Numerous students bring their lesson books from school which is fine also. We start from there, then build higher. Most of the beginner books are very similar.

Rubank Method Books for Flute Or Piccolo
: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced I & II edited by A. C. Peterson and Joseph E. Skornicka, published by Rubank Publications. "One of the most widely used series of methods for individual or like-instrument class instruction. Using a very well-rounded approach including scales, arpeggios, technical studies, studies for musicianship, articulation studies, solos, duets, and studies devoted to the special needs of each instrument, this series provides a fantastic wealth of material for all student musicians."

Scales & Technique
17 Exercices Journaliers De Mecanisme
: 17 Big Daily Finger Exercises for the Flute by Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert, published by Alphonse Leduc: Scale Etudes - I call this fabulous technique resource a "lifetime book" because it guides a flute player through every major and minor key in scales, arpeggios, intervals and other important technical studies giving many options to practice with differing articulations and rhythms. It is the type of book that one never finishes as it includes necessary skills for all levels. It is one that after 30+ years of playing the flute that I still find beneficial to my practice time by challenging myself to play faster and cleaner on these very essential drills. I highly recommend this book for all serious flute players who are willing to put in some practice time and do the work.

Piano Lesson Resources
There are so many wonderful series of lesson books ~ they all have their ups and downs. I haven't found a perfect book yet, but I find that they all may be adapted or added to in order to fit each individual student's needs.
I think the best series for kids (and adults) to use is the Alfred's Basic Piano Course. I have been to several Alfred Piano Teacher Courses and have been happy with the books for the most part. The concepts and songs are introduced in a very logical, smooth way. Each concept is reviewed and reinforced in following lessons. The entire course encompases a ton of books, so I've only listed some to give you the idea below. Most of the books listed under lesson, solo, and fun may be found in all levels. If you see one that looks interesting, click the link where it should lead you to the other levels. Some of the books have "play-along" and listening cd's. Flash cards, games, and computer materials are also available. So many choices!!
ELEMENTARY
The children's series starts with a basic lesson book and has numerous supplemental books to use in addition. I recommend the lesson book and at least the notespeller OR music theory book to get started. Once they have played for a little while, additional books may be based on their interests and needs.
Alfred's Basic Piano Course Lesson Books (Levels 1 - 6)
Supplemental Books (usually all the books of a certain level are color coded):
Notespeller Books ~ Music Theory ~ Ear Training ~ Technic (Scales+) ~ Flash Cards ~ Sight Reading ~ Repertoire ~ Classics ~ Sacred ~ Hymns ~ Christmas ~ "Top Hits" Solos ~ Rock & Jazz ~ Pop Book ~ Fun Book ~ Performance / Recital ~ Ensemble (Duets+) ~ Composition

MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL
Alfred's Chord Approach - This moves faster for older kids who will be able to read notes sooner, and have the physical fine motor skills to play the chords. It also has a vast variety of matching level books.

ADULTS
Adults have a similar variety of choices in supplemental materials.

Students who have taken lessons elsewhere and have used a different series are fine to continue the same series to have continuity, or may switch to another series if the parents and myself feel another would be more beneficial to them.
"FUN BOOKS" - I ask students to pick out what I call 'fun books' to use in addition to the main lesson book. The 'fun books' may be anything of their choice in their level or slightly above. The kids practice more and become excited when it is a piece they really like! I totally leave the choice up to the kids and parents. The music should challenging, but not so much to make them totally frustrated, etither. It's easy to pick with the Alfred books because they are leveled for easy picking. Other pieces I would recommend having the student look at the sheet music. They usually know if it's going to be too easy or too hard.

Where can I order instruments? What brands should I buy?
Parents and students have asked me these questions frequently, which is the largest motivation for this web page. I hope things on this page will make the process easier for everyone. I love the Woodwind & Brasswood Company ~ Most of my instruments have come from this company along with reeds, accessories, stands, and more. They have a great selection with competitive prices. Watch for their many sales and special promotions! My family, friends, students, and I have been pleased with the service and quality.
Which brands? Well, it depends on the instrument, the level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), how serious your child is, how long does he or she plans on playing it, student preferences, and how much you want to invest. Overall though, Yamaha instruments are my favorite brand name.
This lens page is only in the beginning stages of development. I plan to list a variety of quality instruments to help you search for the right instrument. Until I finish, parents of my students, please feel free to email or call me for suggestions.

Learning to read musical notes, rhythm, and symbols is so important to what one of my college professors called "comprehensive musicianship". Training the ear to have better listening skills is also very important. In the lens below, I have gathered materials from around the WWW to use. They have things such as print out flash cards and worksheets, lessons, and online games. Most of the websites have free access.
