Jujitsu Philosophy
The Japanese Martial Art of Jujitsu is an unarmed fighting discipline that has been in existence for almost 2500 year old. We have no knowledge of when exactly is the creation of this martial art; however some techniques that resemble those of Jujitsu have been found incorporated into the Samurai training techniques during the period of 8th to 6th centuries. The earliest historical records in Japan such as the Nihon Shoki or Chronicles of Japan and the Kojiki or Record of Ancient Matters have entries that tell of unarmed Martial arts systems.

Jujitsu Philosophy
Even before the early Japanese Jujitsu martial art developed into it is today, there have already been many other forms of Japanese martial art techniques such as the yawara, Kogusoku, hakuda and kumiuchi, all of which are also collectively called the Sengoku Jujutsu. Traditionally, these ancient Japanese Martial Art techniques gave rise to today's Japanese Jujutsu that we are familiar. The Japanese Jujitsu has a classification under the Edo Jujutsu or the authentic unarmed Nipon combat systems. The Japanese Jujitsu actually became prominent at the time of Tokugawa's reign during the 1600s only to be alienated and banned when Emperor Melse again took over the reigns. Finally, during the middle of the 20th century, the Meiji restoration paved way for the lifting of the ban on Jujitsu and the revived martial art form began to be practiced again.
What is the philosophy behind the Japanese Jujitsu?
Jujitsu exists and the basis of three fundamental states of mind - Mushin, Fudoshin and Zanshin. The correct combination of these fundamentals gives the practitioner the potential, the power and preparation to perform excellently in the Jujitsu martial art.
%u2022 Mushin - Japanese term for "no mind." The spontaneity of practitioner allows for instantaneous movements and action without consciously thinking about them.
%u2022 Fudoshin - "immovable mind" in Japanese. Ideally, the state of mind of practitioner during confrontation.
%u2022 Zanshin - Japanese for "remaining spirit." This connotes the combatant's readiness for the unknown at any time.
Basic Methods of Jujitsu
Jujitsu methods consist of hard, soft and circular external combat. The fundamental techniques of combat attacks are locks, hitting and striking, throws, pinning and immobilizing, strangling and joint-locking, and thrusting and punching. However, Jujitsu emphasizes strongly on the locks and throws defensive methods. It also focuses on close work and in-fighting.
Weapons of Jujitsu
While basically, Jujitsu is unarmed martial art, small-sized weapons like the Tanto or knife, Jitte or truncheon are used when in combat. The Kakushi Buki or hidden weapons such as the Ryofundo Kusari or weighted chain and Bankokuchoki or knuckle-duster may likewise be present as weapons during combat.
