Even before his debut album My World was released, four of Bieber's singles, namely, My World, One Less Lonely Girl, Love Me, and Favorite Girl, were Top 15 hits on the Canadian Hot 100 as well as making the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. This notably made Bieber the only artist in Billboard history to have four singles from an album chart in the Top 40 of the Hot 100 before their album's release.

How did this begin for Bieber? As a 12-year-old Justin entered a local singing contest in his hometown of Stratford, Ontario where he placed second. He was bitten by the performing bug and went on to teach himself how to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. In 2007 Justin and his mother began posting videos on YouTube for friends and family so that they could see Beiber perform. He posted cover versions of songs by Usher, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake that have had millions of views. His channel on YouTube is now one of the most subscribed of all time with almost 780,000 subscribers.

A Toronto company, Rapid Discovery Media, began assisting him in running his YouTube and MySpace accounts, by producing, editing and promoting his videos. After posting a cover of Chris Brown's With You, Brown personally called Bieber and congratulated him on his YouTube success.

Braun, who was a former marketing executive with So So Def, took notice of Bieber's videos, and flew the youngster to Atlanta, Georgia where he was introduced to R&B singer/songwriter Usher, who took an interest in the singer and set up an audition with Island Records executives who signed Beiber to Island Records in October 2008. Justin Timberlake was also reportedly interested in signing Bieber, but he eventually signed with Usher.
