Going on a fishing vacation at Kabetogama?

View maps of Rainy, Namakan and Kabetogama Lake, that surround the Kabetogama Peninsula which is the main land part of Voyageurs National Park. Kabetogama Lake is a community in St Louis County, Minnesota. It is located southeast of International Falls on County Road 122. US Highway 53 is nearby. Kabetogama is located within the Kabetogama Township of the USA. Kabetogama is a Chippewa word that means: 'rough waters'. The lake really lives up to it's name when it is windy.
I have been stranded on islands, because the wind came up fast and the boat was too small to cross the lake. It gets very rough with 5' - 6' waves because it is a deep lake. People on shore do watch for signals from stranded boaters and will come out to rescue you in a big boat. It's a good idea to have paper with you for starting a fire for a signal! Access the Trail Heads map to remote wilderness fishing hot spots, and Kabetogama Resorts. A lot of people return to Kabetogama to vacation and rent a lake cabin. A good map will take you where you want to go at Kabetogama Lake.
There is plenty of wilderness area to explore. For serious hunters and fishermen, if you are not familiar with the area I would recommend a guide into the wilderness. Or, take a map and trust your map, it is your best friend out there. A Compass can come in handy too. You could also take a guided tour by the park rangers on a large shuttle boat. Resort owners will often times take their guest out on a tour or to go fishing.

You can see that as the crow flies, it isn't far to the Canadian boarder. People like to go into Canada by way of boat to do some fishing too. - Kettle Falls is a big attraction and one you wouldn't want to miss, it is a historic place and is very charming!
