Going on a fishing vacation at Kabetogama?
Kabetogama Lake is a community in St Louis County, Minnesota. It is located southeast of International Falls on County Road 122. US Highway 53 is nearby. Kabetogama is located within the Kabetogama Township in the USA. Kabetogama is a Chippewa word that means: "rough waters". The lake really lives up to it's name when it is windy, the waves come up very quickly and many have been taken by surprise with capsized boats.

Kabetogama Map
A good map will take you where you want to go at Kabetogama Lake.
The interior lakes of the Kabetogama Peninsula are Locator, Ek, Quill, Cruiser, Shoepack and Little Shoepack that have hiking trail to them, the trails can only be accessed by water. There is plenty of wilderness area to explore. For serious hunters and fishermen, if you are not familiar with the area I would recommend a guide into the wilderness. Or, take a map and trust your map, it is your best friend out there. A Compass can come in handy too. You could also take a guided tour by the park rangers on a large shuttle boat. Resort owners will often times take their guest out on a tour or to go fishing.

The Gateway General Store is right across the road from the Kabetogama Walleye Statue. My cousin Marlin and her husband, Jim used to own the business for many years. I hear that the folks who own it now are great folks, and she is a nurse who is a first responder to emergencies in the area. Kabetogama does have a volunteer fire department, a first responders team, a game warden, and of course there is a road grader-man, a kept dumper, VNP rangers and state rangers, boat tour guides; fishing, canoe and kayak guides, a relater, great resorts, gift shops, bingo, craft sales, nice places to eat dinner, a bait and fishing tackle shop, a marina, events at the Kabetogama Hall, a church, blueberry pancake feeds, bars, and the whole area is just beautiful to see. I like to go rock climbing on the huge granite rock hills, which are some of the most ancient exposed rocks in the world.

The sunsets are a favorite pass-time for me at Kabetogama. Getting to listen to ducks and loons while watching the sun go down...I prefer that any day.

I have been stranded on islands, because the wind came up fast and the boat was too small to cross the lake. In this situation its best to just stay put and wait it out. The lake can get rough with 5' - 6' waves because it is a deep lake. People on shore do watch for signals from stranded boaters and will come out to rescue you in a big boat. It's a good idea to have paper with you for starting a fire for a signal and to keep warm! Access the Trail Heads map to remote wilderness fishing hot spots, and Kabetogama resorts.
Many people return to Kabetogama to vacation and rent a lake cabin or camp year after year. The Kabetogama Fishing Report is very helpful! Read an interview with Ed Town, my "Uncle Eddie" by the International Falls Daily Journal, a retired fishing guide, he is very knowledgeable about Kabetogama history and fishing.

I don't know about you, but I love clean air. In the winter the air is crisp and clear. It is nice to breath in the great outdoors with the smells of nature all around you. Whatever time of year it is, of you are not used to the fresh-air at Kabetogama, you will need a long nap after your first day there, and when you go to sleep, you will go to sleep fast. I don't know what it is, it happens to me when I go to visit my Mom. One of these days I hope to return to Kab to live. I like it there because there are good people there that I know very well and love with all my heart; family and friends.

- Kabetogama has some good Bass Lakes, Its a nice voyage into the interior, and a few miles to hike it. There are some row boats for people to use, first come first served, or by reservation and a fee.

- Wow I love your image of the northern lights. They are so beautiful I can remember sitting out on the back porch in Prince George watching them for hours. I had not heard of Kabetogama before so am very impressed with this lake side community. It looks like a wonderful spot to visit.
