Kam Williams Popular Movie Reviews

Kam Williams reviews that attracted attention recently.
Terminator Salvation Film Review
Kam wasn't impressed with this movie and gave it one star.

"When you decide to shoot a Terminator sequel sans Schwarzenegger (sorry, a cameo of Arnold's head atop a body double doesn't count), and with an entirely new cast, you might want to consider devoting some quality time to character development in order to give your audience a chance to become familiar with and, thus, reason to care about the protagonists. Otherwise you'll probably end up with a superficial, sci-fi saga like Terminator Salvation (T-4), a special effects indulgence in fight sequences, chase scenes, pyrotechnics and techno wizardry at the expense of emotional depth."
The Great Buck Howard Film Review
Kam says "Malkovich Shines in Character Study of Kreskin-Like Mentalist"

Rated Excellent (4 stars)
Rated PG for suggestive language and a drug reference.
The Real Great Debaters DVD Review
Williams says"A year ago, Denzel Washington directed and co-starred in The Great Debaters, a compelling, if fanciful docudrama which recounted how a debate team from an unheralded, Southern black college had traveled in 1935 from Texas to Cambridge, Massachusetts to defeat Harvard and win the national championship in a competition aired live, coast to coast, on national radio."

Excellent (4 stars)
Unrated
Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story Film Review
World-renowned Dr. Ben Carson has long been considered by his colleagues as the best pediatric neurosurgeon around, so it's no surprise that he remains in such great demand. Besides being stationed at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where he performs over 300 operations on children each year, the peripatetic physician also crisscrosses the entire planet to share his miraculous talents with less fortunate folks in developing countries who might not otherwise be able to afford his services.

Excellent (4 stars)
Rated: TV-PG
Zack and Miri Make a Porno Film Review
Williams says "Not Much to Recommend about Raunchy Kevin Smith Sitcom"

Between its titillating theme and the omnipresence of current comedy rage Seth Rogen, Zack and Miri Make a Porno is all but assured of being a critic-proof hit with its targeted raging-hormones demographic. Nonetheless, this raunchy sitcom pales in comparison to a couple of other recently-released teensploits, namely, Sex Drive and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Fair (1 star)
Rated R for graphic nudity, pervasive profanity, ethnic slurs, explicit sexuality and crude humor.

Kam Williams Oscar Predictions

Each year, like most critics, Kam Williams takes a stab at guessing who will get the Oscars. He wins some, loses others.
Kam Williams 2009 Oscar Predictions
Best Picture

Will Win: Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog is the prohibitive favorite. Benjamin Button has a puncher's chance of a surprise knockout, although Milk is actually the second best of the bunch.
Deserves to Win: Slumdog Millionaire
Overlooked: The Dark Knight, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Secret Life of Bees, Burn after Reading

Best Director

Will Win: Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)
In a category ordinary coupled with Best Picture, Boyle is the obvious pick, unless the Academy opts to recognize Fincher (Benjamin Button) for his body of work.
Deserves to Win: Danny Boyle
Overlooked: Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight), Woody Allen (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees), Joel and Ethan Coen (Burn after Reading)

All about the Beat: Book Review
I know that Mr. McWhorter's prior work has generally been dismissed by his detractors as the rants of an effete, out-of-touch, neo-con. I probably trashed a couple of his earlier books myself. However, this one is worth reading, if only for its highlighting a serious flaw in African-American culture which allows cadence to serve as a substitute for substance and critical thinking.

Accountable Book Review
It is important to note that while Accountable does expect Obama to deliver, it very well concedes that to do so he will need the support of not only Congress, but also governors and other state officials, community leaders, faith-based organizations and ordinary citizens. And given the overwhelming anecdotal evidence of suffering shared in these pages, it is clear that the country is facing formidable challenges in the days ahead.

Marriage 101 Book Review
In an entertaining and challenging fashion, the author lays out her eight-part plan, using the tale of Sleeping Beauty "as a parable for a divine marriage plan." Besides scriptures, the book is filled with plenty of helpful exercises likely to strengthen the foundation of Christian couples, provided both partners are motivated to enough to internalize these lofty spiritual ideals and put them into daily practice.
