Thirunallar Tempel

French dreams of an Indian Empire began and ended in Pondicherry. But in the scattered territories of the Union Territory of Pondicherry there remains what little there is left of the French influence in India. The Union Territory of Pondicherry comprises of 4 coastal regions viz- Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam .

Karaikal is on the east coast about 140 kms south of Pondicherry and 300 kms south of Chennai ( Madras ) located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal.

Karaikal is known all over the country for its unique and the only temple devoted to the Lord Saneeswara(Lord Saturn) at Thirunallar. Those who are troubled by vicissitudes in life and wish bright future do spare their time to pay obeisance to the Lord Saturn. More than two thousand pilgrims visit this temple everyday. The Sani Peyarchi festival is the "Kumbh Mela of Pondicherry" attracting lakhs of devotees.

Karaikal is the Gateway to various places of worship in the eastern coast of Tamilnadu.

1. Suryan:

This is a one of a kind temple dedicated to the Sun God and it also houses shrines to each of the other eight celestial bodies - the Nava Grahams. It was built by the Chola kings and is located near Tirumangalakkudi. This temple is dedicated to the Sun (star) around which all other planets revolve. The influence of weaker Sun would lead to diseases such as Typhoid, Lack of strength in bones, Eye problem etc. The prescribed remedy according to the priests are in form of fasting on Sundays, donating a cow and worship of Surya. 2. Chandran:

This loving god is specially worshiped on Mondays. A worship to this graha is bestowed with all happiness and strength. A prayer to this graha frees one from all sorrows and mental afflictions etc.

3. Guru :

The deity is came to be known as Aabathsagayar. As Ganesha vanquished the demon Gajamuhasuran, he was called as 'Kalangaamal kaatha Vinayagar'. This sthala is also called as Thirumana Mangalam as Parvatidevi undertook severe penance and married Lord Siva here.

4. Raaghu:

This huge temple is built by Gandaraditya Chola son of Parnataka chola I. It is spread over 15 acres, towering Gopurams and several mantaps. There are as many 12 theertams in this place. Rahu Kalam is generally an inauspicious time, wherein no constructive activity should begin or inaugrated.

5. Budhan :

This temple ( Tiruvenkadu ) was closed on account of death of a family member related to temple trust. We could not visit the temple which was closed for mourning. Mercury is considered lord of knowledge.

6. Sukran :

This Shiva temple is dedicated to planet Venus. Planet Venus dosha leads to lack of harmony in married life, diseases arising out of cold etc. The remedy for warding the evil effects of Venus suggested is by wearing diamond jewelery and giving Bengal grams, white dress and silver article as gift.

7. Kaedhu :

This temple can be covered depending on the timing if one is on the round trip after having lunch. One can visit Poompuhar museum and beach and spend their time accordingly.
