Raising Awareness with Katie

When I became pregnant with Katie, I knew on the fourth day. It was a long pregnancy. When she was born I cried so hard the nurses wanted to give me a tranquilizer. I said, no, I'm not upset, I'm so happy I will never have to be pregnant again.

That was the easy part.
Next comes
Raising Katie

She is 6 now, almost 7. Katie loves so many things, but thanks to Wow Wow Wubbzy teaching her about things she can do. Barney telling her to do her share, and Bob the builder telling her yes we can, she has managed to come up with the idea that the world is worth saving.

Thank goodness for the creators of those shows who had the insight to know the next generation needed a boost.

We choose to showcase different causes that Katie herself wanted. She is currently focusing on Save The Whales and watches the video below every day. She is going to help me put together a raffle for the Cub Scouts in November and send in the money. We are learning the song right now.

Adopt an Orca

Wildlife Adoption Center - National Wildlife Federation:
Two distinct types of orcas ply the world's waves. Some, called "residents," live close to shore in groups, or pods, of 10 to 20 related animals, including adult males and females, led by a mature female. Males may leave the family pod temporarily to mate in other pods. Young females may spend less time with their original pod once they begin having offspring of their own.

Other orcas, called "transients," live in pods of three to seven and do not stay together as a family group as strictly as residents do. While residents are primarily fish eaters, transients feed on marine mammals, including seals, sea lions, whales and dolphins. This diet has won the species the common name "killer whale," even though the orca is a type of dolphin, indeed, the largest dolphin of all. Like other sea creatures, orcas face threats from ocean pollution and from global warming, which may reduce populations of prey species.

National Wildlife Federation's symbolic adoption costs just $30 - less than a dime a day. With your donation, you'll receive an Adoption Kit that includes an orca plush, a personalized certificate of adoption to frame and display, an orca screensaver for your computer...and best of all, the satisfaction of knowing you're helping to protect these animals and other imperiled species on land and in the sea.

What's next

My baby girl

To be honest, the beginning wasn't so bad. I was in a fog for awhile, and I don't remember much. I know she didn't sleep in her crib (EVER). I spent most of her infant nights in a rocking chair. She got a little older and started to have what I thought were nightmares. The doctors said it was asthma. They treated her for asthma, which made the condition worse. When all the tests were said and done, I was told it was laryngomalacia. She was supposed to outgrow it by 18 months, but she was almost three when it stopped.

WHAT IS THAT?

Laryngomalacia (literally, "soft larynx") is a very common condition of infancy, in which the soft, immature cartilage of the upper larynx collapses inward during inhalation, causing airway obstruction. It can also be seen in older patients, especially those with neuromuscular conditions resulting in weakness of the muscles of the throat. However, the infantile form is much more common.

Very Different

I was wished good luck A LOT when people heard I was having a girl. I believed that the way you raise them would make them all similar. Well, what did I know? Katie is still in our bed, and has been since she was diagnosed 7 years ago. She is afraid of the dark. Katie is very thickheaded and demanding. She is dramatic and emotional. She is ours.

Katie loves animals and counts them from the bus on the way to school and back. She is smart and tough. She was climbing a ladder at 9 months. She loves Hannah Montana and Club Penguin, but already picked out a husband, and the first boy she wants to kiss. (two different boys of course).

Best of all, she has taught my husband patience and unconditional love. In our 20 years together, no one has touched his heart like she does.

Thank you baby girl

Polar bear Facts

Humans are the polar bears only predator. Baby polar bears often starve. In fact, 70 percent do not live to their third birthday. Sometimes seals are hard to find, especially in the summer when the ice has melted. All across the Arctic, man is moving in to mine oil and coal and there is less space for the polar bear to live. Oil spills can be very dangerous. A bear with oil on its coat cannot regulate its body temperature properly. If the bear eats the oil while grooming it could die.

Man made pollution is also a cause of death. At each stage of the food chain, pollutants get more concentrated. By the end when the polar bear eats the seal and it could be lethal.
