Welcome to Keene

 

Keene, located in the Monadnock Region, is a quaint town with much history and culture. It is the home of Keene State College and the Swamp Bats, a minor league baseball team. And it is the home of the Pumpkin Festival, which has produced enough carved pumpkins being lit to make it into the Guiness World Book of Records.

Keene is the area's hot spot for great food, coffee, and shopping. With several areas of shopping from the Colony Mills to the Monadnock Shopping Plaza and more you can find just about everything you need right here in town.

The fifth oldest newspaper in the country, The Keene Sentinel is the area's local daily newspaper.
Monadnock Shopper News
The Monadnock Shopper News has been a source of advertising information since 1959. This free paper is mailed out and available at local businesses weekly.
Parent Express

Keeping the Kids Busy 

There are many programs that your kids can go to after school and during the summer that are cost effective and fun for the kids.
MANY Options
MANY Options is a non-profit program for students in grades five through nine aimed at giving teens positive experiences during after school hours.

Run by Monadnock Family Services, the program gives students daily activity choices. These include volunteering at the Monadnock Humane Society, using computers, dance lessons, swimming at the YMCA, a cooking club, and much, much more.

A safe walk from Keene Middle School, the program is housed on Vernon Street, with an entrance on Washington Street, in Keene and runs Monday through Friday on the SAU 29 school district schedule from 2:30-5:30pm. The program is open to all residents of the area.
Keene Family YMCA
With a swimming pool and rock climbing wall, kids are sure to love the YMCA. They have a wide variety of programs for members of the entire family. They also have an after school program.

Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships. If you have a child who could use some positive adult role models and some extra support, this is an excellent program for it.

The Keene Public Library is wonderful. They have a huge children's section as well as many videos and DVDs to borrow and a wide variety of programs. Their web site offers even more opportunities for doing research from home and learning.

Pumpkins Anyone? 

Keene has been the home of the Pumpkin Festival since 1991, where they had 600 lit pumpkins lining the streets of downtown Keene. The festival has grown over the years and is now one of the highlights of the calendar for those in the area as well as those venturing here just to see the pumpkins.

Over the years they have broken the Guiness Book of World Records several times, the last being in 2003 with 28,952 carved pumpkins being lit at the same time. In 2006 Boston swept the record from Keene with 30,128 pumpkins. To make up for it, Keene had a record breaking crowd of around 80,000 visitors.

Sports 

As with most towns, sports are an important part of life.
Keene Swampbats
The Keene Swamp Bats - the baseball kind, that is - are not a figment of the imagination. This summer they will continue the proud tradition of baseball in Keene as a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

The team was named the seventh member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in November, 1997. The Keene Swamp Bats are a non-profit organization.
