Keep Your Kids Safe Around Dogs

If you buy a puppy to protect you, just remember 77% of the dogs who do the biting belong to the victim's family or friends and 61% happen in the victim's home or in a familiar place. And 77% of all injuries to children under 10 were to the face. 

Never put your face close to a dog's face.

Most of the dog bites were unprovoked but that is what we say. We must realize that dogs are not human beings and some of the things we do, that we consider normal, the dog sees as an attack. Like hugging and kissing, we view that as acceptable behavior. But dogs don't and that is one of the reasons a lot of children get bitten in the face.

Also if children are frightened they run, but they can never outrun a dog. The dog thinks they are prey and attacks. 

If you want a dog and you got kids get a safe breed like a Hound Dog they seem to be the safest dog. Also teach your kids that dogs are wild animals and they can bite. If approached by a strange dog be like a tree and don't look at the dog. And at home don't stick your face near a dog's face it is too close to its teeth. 

So who should read the sign on your gate. 

In most situations "Like a Tree" and "Like a Log" will keep you safe as most dogs are not after you as food. If confronted by a pack of wolves that are after you for dinner, then the situation changes and you should get up a tree or you will be lunch.

If you have strayed into the dog's home territory the situation is a bit different. If you are standing like a tree then slowly, very slowly shuffle backwards to get out of their territory. If knocked over just stay unmoving on the ground until somebody comes along or the dogs lose interest.

I was standing like a tree with two dogs in front of me and one dog put his mouth around my leg. I still didn't move and he let go and moved away. I don't know what I would have done if it had started biting. I kinda froze, I was worried to say the least. It just goes to show that like a tree is quite effective.

There will be times when it dosen't work but I think it is better than running unless you can get to a place where the dog can't get you.

Another time you should keep away from dogs is when they have puppies. Mother dogs are very protective and they will lash out at you sometimes for no reason. Tell you children to keep away from dogs with puppies because that situation can become very explosive very fast. A puppy just has to make a fear noise and the mother dog could attack.

Always treat dogs with respect especially strange dogs. Dogs have been living with mankind since man was in a cave but they can still be a wild animal.

If you are walking your dog and you see a stray dog, check to see if it is the same sex as your dog. And if it is watch out. Usually males fight males and females fight females.

If you and your dog are attacked by a stray dog, you could be in a potentially dangerous situation. Your dog expects you to protect it because you are the alpha leader, and that is what you are supposed to do. But don't get between the dogs because you will get bitten. Your pet will see you as an aggressor not as her owner so she will bite you, so don't get between them.

It is recommended that when you take your dog for a walk carry a heavy walking stick. And just smack the other dog as hard as you can between the ears, and just keep hitting him until he backs away. Also carrying pepper spray and using it on the stray dog will deter him. But you must spray it up its nose and keep spraying it until you run out of spray. Just be careful sticking your hand in front of a fighting dog but if you are spraying as you put your hand in you should be okay.

If you somehow get involved in a dog fight you will get bitten. If you are going to grab the other dog walk behind it and pick its hind legs off the ground like a wheel barrow, then slowly circle it sideways. As long as you are moving the dog sideways it will have trouble turning and biting you but it still can.
