Diagnosing Kennel Cough

And Treatment of Kennel Cough

Diagnosis is usually based on the symptoms and a history of recent exposure to other dogs. Has the dog been in a Kennel or around other dogs that could have been infected.

Blood work can be preformed to verify individual causes of Kennel Cough, but because the symptoms are very reliable signs, these blood test are not usually done.

Treatment of Kennel Cough -There are two treatment options depending on the severity of the disease

In mild cases Bronchodilators or cough suppressants may be used.

In more severe cases where the animal is not eating, has a fever, or has signs of pneumonia, antibiotics are often used.

Bronchodilators and even aerosol therapy can be used. Steroids or Cough suppressants should not be used in severe cases because further complications can occur.

Because pressure on the throat and neck seems to make coughing worse, dogs with a cough should wear a head collar or harness instead of a usual neck collar.
