Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass State and is located between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. Kentucky can be considered to be in the Midwest by some standards and part of the South by other standard.

Sadly, the once rolling hills of blue grass are becoming increasingly developed as commercial and residential structures are built. For this reason, the Bluegrass Region is listed as one of the top 100 most endangered sites.

The blue grass is ideal for providing pasture for livestock. Add to that, the beauty of a lawn of well manicured blue grass and it is easy to see why the Inner Bluegrass Region is where most of the state's population lives.

Kentucky is geographically divided up into the following regions, from East to West: Cumberland Plateau, Outer Bluegrass, Inner Bluegrass, Mississippi Plateau (which also sits under the Outer Bluegrass), Western Coal Fields and Jackson Purchase.

At the center of Inner Bluegrass Region is the city of Lexington, Kentucky. The circle of the Inner Bluegrass extends roughly 90 miles in radius from Lexington to cities such as Frankfort, Kentucky.

Lexington, Kentucky is known as the "Horse Capital of the World" because of its excellent thoroughbred horses and as the "Athens of the West" because of rich architecture. Kentucky is also known for more than just breeding fine horses. The State also holds races and derbies that are recognized globally. The horse races also breed another animal, the gambler. Betting on horses or your favorite jockey can make the sport more fun to watch with the anticipation of a big payoff in the end.

The culture in Lexington is not all centered around grass and horses. The city has a lively night scene, with live music venues, dance halls and clubs. Lexington is also home to a professional orchestra, opera house, ballet and children's theatres and Broadway theatre, as well as a few performing arts theatres.

Because the population in Lexington, Kentucky has grown in recent decades, the need for extra space arises long before a family wants to move outside the city or relocated within Lexington. Limestone is good for more than filtering water for distilling whiskey. Limestone quarries are a large contributor to the job market and economy of the area. The limestone supply is not limited to Lexington and extends throughout the state into areas like Frankfort, Kentucky.

Frankfort is an area often called a little bit of heaven, which originated in Kentucky's religious heritage. Frankfort is also the state capital and the government is not surprisingly one of the largest industries to the area. Other major industries in Frankfort are education, health, social services, manufacturing and retail.
