What is Kevlar?
When you hear the word Kevlar it sounds like some character on a science fiction movie. However, that is not even close to the reality of what it is.
Kevlar is an organic fiber with tensile strength. It is resistant to abrasion and impact, so it is a great protective material. Some protective products made out of Kevlar include Kevlar lined hoodies, tshirts, helmets, jackets, and gloves.

And how did it ever become a component of clothing?
Kevlar was first introducted commercially in the 1970's by the DuPont company after it was developed by two scientists, Stephanie Kwolek and Roberto Berendt in 1965.
There are different grades of Kevlar. Kevlar 29 is the grade used for protective clothing. Clothing made with Kevlar is most likely worn by people trying to avoid abrasion injuries such as motorcycle riders and people such as emergency service providers because of it's heat resistance properties.

Kevlar Lined Hoodie - Hip Hop Fashion Trend or Safety Gear?
There could be a new trend developing among the hip hop crowd. It is a Kevlar lined hoodie. Kevlar is an ultra strong synthetic fiber used in making body armor. It is stronger than steel of the same weight. Unlike steel, it is machine washable, light weight, and flexible. The Kevlar lined hoodie is being promoted by a few companies as being stab-proof and abrasion resistant.
Now that Busta Rhymes has been seen wearing a bullet proof vest during his performances, it could spark a whole new sub culture. It could be one that combines the already trendy hoodie with an element of street smart protection. It is one more way to step up your game in a culture known for violence and crime. Also, the fact that they are relatively hard to find make them even more desirable among such a fashion conscious troupe.
Could this type of protective gear give you more status out on the streets than your bling? Only time will tell, but it does have all of the characteristics of something that could sweep the hip hop world. Would that be a good thing? It is hard to say. Considering there are probably a significant number of people that will want to put a Kevlar lined hoodie to the test, it could be dangerous for those wearing them. On the other hand, stab-proof and abrasion resistance is always a good thing when it comes to personal safety.
