My First Visit to Khajuraho

My first visit to Khajuraho, India was in 1974. At that time, it was a much more natural setting for the temples.

The temples were located in an open field and did not have the manicured gardens that surround them now. Yet, as you can see from the above picture, it had a unique beauty that seemed ageless.

A Village Still!

Like much of India, Khajuraho is reminescent of villages scattered everywhere thoughout India.

Children still play in the streets after a rain, and people go about their daily tasks in spite of the multitude of tourists that swarm throughout the area.

Like many famous places, the sites are less significant to the locals that to the visitors. It is a part of their history. They view the temples as just another part of their environment in which they live out their lives.

Architecture of Passion

There are few structures in India that are more
architecturally intriguing
than these 9th to 12th century Khajuraho temples of the Chandela dynasty, situated in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Originally there were 85 temples built in the North Indian 'Nagara' style of architecture, but the majority have deteriorated or been destroyed. Sadly, only 20 of them have survived the harsh millenium of natural weathering that has passed since their construction.

The temple sculpture and images depict eroticism in its rawest form, dance, music, and scenes of everyday life; but it is the erotic sculptures which have made the Khajuraho temples famous.

The eroticism is tied to a legend of origination of the Chandela dynasty. It is said that in a moment of passion and lust, the Moon God seduced Hemvati, a beautiful Brahmin girl, resulting in the birth of Chandravarman, the founder of the Chandela dynasty.

Later in his life Chandravarman had a dream in which his mother requested that he build these erotic temples. He complied with her wish and we now have these marvelous architectural wonders.
