As in Thirsty, Silly

She's beautiful, she's sexy, she's talented, and she has to fight to work in an industry hell bent on discovering the next size 0 under 25 years of age. The world is full of all shapes and sizes yet Hollywood (and beyond) chooses to focus on the talented 2%. Why can't the media portray all women in a positive light? If there is anyone who constantly gets a bad rap then it is Kirstie Alley.

What really leaves a lasting impression is her glorious hair, raspy voice and sincere smile. When Alley smiles you can't help but smile back. I know, nobody wants to be remembered for their smile. But really when you meet someone for the first time, isn't it the eyes and smile you make a connection with?

Alley's superstardom career started late. She was already popular with Trekies when she portrayed Lt. Saavik, a female Vulcan, in The Wrath of Khan but her career didn't really blossom until her 30s when she hit it big with the primetime television comedy Cheers as Rebecca Howe from 1987 - 1993. After a successful run on TV she returned to the movies and the equally sexy John Travolta for a series of movies about talking babies, Look Who's Talking.

Despite popular thinking, she hasn't been far from the limelight consistently appearing either in movies or television ever since. Most recently Profoundly Normal, Without a Trace, Fat Actress (see below), Write & Wrong, and the upcoming Nailed.

This lens is dedicated to this lovely, funny and talented woman.

Three reasons to love Kirstie Alley

  • Her contagious laugh

  • Her wit

  • Her ability to survive the tabloids

"You're not going to live your life unscathed."

How to Lose Your Ass & Regain Your Life

In Review

There's all this talk going back and forth about Kirstie Alley right now. Whether she's a positive or negative influence for large women depends on the group or individual. Despite her weight, she is the 'it girl' of the moment. She's also just another woman trying to make it through life the best she can. She just happens to be using her butt to do it instead of her breasts.

How to Lose your Ass... is not a how-to book as the name suggests but a diary-biography. Each chapter opens with a few excerpts from Kirstie's diary followed by a vignette. Diary entries begin on December 31st, 2003 and end January 1st 2005. A year and a day. There aren't a lot of entries; about 63 ranging from a few lines to a few paragraphs. There's a mix up with dates on two entries that appear on the book flap and then again inside. This is not a tell-all book, just some exciting and sentimental tidbits, a few juicy parts. Each chapter reads like a complete story.

Kirstie talks about sex with Tim Matheson (and a few other people), how she first learned about Scientology, the secret behind the name Kirstie, her life long self esteem issues, and her assassin Corgi. Doing coke, decorating houses, lying to friends, family and to herself, and bringing Fat Actress to fruition are all open to discussion. She talks about her daughter Lillie and son True and their issues with weight, hers and their own; the personal tragedy that led her to gain weight and the revelation and emotional release she witnessed with Dianetics. How she secretly blames John Travolta for everything, the death of her mother, and one of my favourite topics%u2026airplane seats are all mentioned. The last chapter is the best of funny. I can't tell you why or the title because it would ruin it for you. Let's just say it's something everyone can relate to and leave it at that.

Be prepared for some swearing and other vulgar analogies. She doesn't go overboard with them but they are present and may offend the delicate of mind. There's the occasional mention of her first marriage but not a lot about the who, when, what and how of it. There are lots of black and white photos from her childhood, a few of her children and of her beautiful parents. I would have liked more current photos of Kirstie included. Not embarrassing ones that certain media like to focus on but something to bring the reader to the present.

With Alley's book you are sure to experience some gentle giggles and some heart felt sighs. Her warm sensibility and mild sarcastic tone are reminiscent to a chat with an old friend. How to Lose Your Ass and Regain Your Life was an enjoyable look into one of Hollywood's foxiest women. I'd definitely read another book by Alley. There is still much to be learned about this stunning actress.

Her Family

Kirstie Alley has two incredibly beautiful children she shares with Hardy Boy, Parker Stevenson whom she was married to from December 1983 - 1997.

William True was born on September 28, 1992 and Lillie Price was born on June 15, 1994. It is totally not surprising that they produced such lovely offspring.

"Fat Actress" was Alley's love child with fat and comedy. It follows around a "fat" actress as she tries to gain employment in the acting industry. The six-episode series appeared on Showtime to a lukewarm audience but is a must see for fans of Alley's dark wit. Kirstie calls Fat Actress a "universal metaphor for women." It features many appearances from some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Scientology

Kirstie is very open about what Scientology has done for her. She touts it as the reason she was able to stop using cocaine. She was introduced to Scientology by her good friend and fellow actor John Travolta.

Official Website

There's no officially operating website by Kirstie Alley although this url http://www.kirstiealley.net claims itself as the only authorized webpage. It's had a place holder for some time but I have my doubts. Still it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on it.

Alley mentioned in the interview above that she was unleashing her own website soon but her fans are still waiting.

I if bad for her, so much potential, and is always attacked. If there was a way to help her get back on her feet and get her mind set right. she would tear up Hollywood. She is an awesome actress. but this hype and bad marriages have been destroying her. Now she does not care anymore and is headed down a very destructive road. I give her at least a year and a halve if something is done for her. I know her world is upside down and she is crying for help but everyone is flashing their cameras just to get the last picture and signature. I don't want anything from her just that she gets better and back to having fun.
