How to lay a table for Silver Service Dining

Ranked #7,159 in Education, #162,480 overall

Kitchen Cutlery

You might have the costliest cutlery set as a part of your kitchen cutlery, but it will be of no use unless you set the dinner table properly. There is a certain rule that needs to be followed when setting up a dinner table. You need to make sure that all things should be set at equal distances and this includes the cutlery. You should also ensure that the sterling silver flatwares are balanced. One should only use sterling silver flatware at a formal table setting. Take care that all the spoons and forks are of the same design. However, this does not mean that all the sterling silver utensils should match.

The sterling silver flatware used for dessert that is brought in along with the desert plates but not brought to the table might or might not match the flatware used for dinner. However, the forks and knives should match. Most people make the mistake of seating people too close to each other. This is not proper and sufficient elbow room should be provided for the guests. An ideal setting would be approximately 2 feet from the centre of one plate to the centre of the other plate. One should first put service plates around the table at equal distances.

The order of placing the sterling silver flatware depends on its order of use. The implements that will be used first should be put furthest from the plate. The salad knife should be put to the immediate right of the plate and next to it the meat knife. Put the salad fork on the left of the plate and next to it the meat fork. The fish fork is placed to the left of the meat form. You should not forget that the cutting edge of the knife should be facing the plate. The soup spoon should be placed outside the knives.

Dessert forks and spoons are not arranged on the table and are brought in with the desert plate prior to serving of dessert. If you're planning to serve rolls or bread, ensure that one butter plate is provided. Place the butter plate at the left of the setting and on top of the forks. Place the butter knife slantwise across the butter plate. Ensure that the sharp edge of the butter knife faces towards the table's edge.

As far as wineglasses are concerned, they should be placed in such a way that the smaller ones are closer to the table edge with the bigger ones behind the smaller ones. They should also be placed above the knife. Are you also planning to serve coffee? In such a case you should place the cup and saucer on the right side of the layout. Ensure that you put the spoon to the saucer's right hand side. The desert spoon and the cake fork should be placed on top of the service plate and at right angles to the other forks and spoons.
