Kitchen Design: Tips & Trends

I think kitchens are the heart of the home.  It is the place where everyone always gravitates to.

With that said, I think that is why the trend to remodel kitchens only keeps growing.  People are making their kitchens work for them and their situations.

Of all the rooms in your home, remodeling the kitchen recoups the most value at resale.  According to Remodeling Magazine's 2008-09 Cost Vs. Value report, a minor kitchen remodel recoups 79.5% and a major kitchen remodel comes in at 76%.

Many of us use our kitchens every day but don't always necessarily think about them really working for us.  What I mean is you usually end up making at least  one meal in there each day but some of us have our pantry in our laundry room, or a fridge that is just too far from the sink, or no pantry space so you have claimed valuable space somewhere else in the kitchen to make it work and you are "used" to it.  But it doesn't feel right and you don't know why.

To start the remodel kitchen process there are some things to think about that I hope this lense sheds some light on.

Kitchens are very unique, and I am not going to lie to you, can be a pain to remodel.  Not only are they expensive, but not having your kitchen for a min. of 2 weeks during the process is not fun.  Also, it is an intimidating process...We know what we like but we don't know what our options are or what things should cost or quite frankly how to tie it into the rest of the house.

When it comes to kitchens you really need to hire a local contactor/designer. But we can take some steps that I have listed below that will at least help this process flow more smoothly and remember you can always email me a kitchen question anytime. .

Kitchen Inspiration....

Rule of Thumb

Here is a general rule of thumb for kitchen expenditures....
60% for cabinetry
25% for appliances
15% for countertops

Kitchen To Do List

Kitchen List

This isn't any grocery list!

Note: If you are a "true" Do-It-Yourselfer than most of these bullets you can ignore. However timing and costs are probably still pretty accurate. Always expect the worst..You don't always know what's behind your walls.
  • I think the most important start to any kitchen remodel is the "dream process". Start letting your mind wander on the "what ifs". This is my favorite part. Pay attention to what isn't working in your kitchen and what changes could really make you happy.
  • Start looking through magazines, kitchen design books, go check out some showrooms locally, watch tv, ie: HGTV or even the Food Channel. Keep your eyes open and start answering your "what ifs". Keep your ideas in a special KITCHEN DREAM FILE. Photocopies, pictures ripped out of a magazine or book (make sure you own it), DVR a show, keep brochures etc.
  • A mandatory step...Not always the most fun but a MUST! The budget. Start planning a budget. If you have NO idea where to start with that. Go to your local Home Depot, or other kitchen showroom and just start asking alot of questions. The more educated in the process you can get the less intimidating when you are finally ready to hire your team.
  • Ahh yes hiring the team. I would recommend starting off by asking friends or family who have recently remodeled their kitchens. I think referrals from this source is the best. If you don't know anyone or that hasn't happened to anyone you know, good you'll hopefully have a great referral for them when they are ready after seeing your new, beautiful kitchen.
  • Under my links section on this lense I mention the National Kitchen & Bath Assocation website. It is not only a great source to find someone locally to design for you but it has some good tidbits that I can't fit on this lense.
  • I have heard of people having good luck with designers from places like Home Expo (Home Depot family), which check your local directory, last I heard Home Depot was closing some of these stores, or The Great Indoors (Sears family.)....Again see my links section for more info. on these two places.
  • Please make sure whoever you hire is a licensed professional for your kitchen. There is too much room for error and better safe than sorry. You have to like them or this will suck. Also, there are alot of designers who are intimidating and if you don't like them DON'T HIRE them. You always have options and you will find someone who will be great for you.
  • In remodeling once you get your budget be aware with change orders and last minute items you end up having to have your budget will typically be 20% over your initial budget. I think it's good to know this going in, so you aren't in shock or overbuild.
  • Keep in mind even the best planned kitchen usually isn't ever on time. Be prepared if your designer tells you, you'll be without your kitchen for 2 weeks add 2 weeks to that in your mind. So if it's less, big yeah and if it's really 4 weeks then you were mentally prepared for it.
  • Construction is messy! Don't look and don't worry eventually you will have your new kitchen and that will outweigh the current mess.
  • I like to tell my clients to pack up all their kitchen stuff as if you are moving and move them out of the way of the kitchen. Keep what necessities you will need, drinking glasses, some flatware etc. but let's face it most of us have a kitchen packed full of stuff you don't need that often. And with it packed up it stays CLEAN.
  • Lastly, keep the lines of communication open between you and the designer. Make sure that neither one of you are surprised at any part of the process.

Kitchen Lighting Source!

Please check out this link...

I don't ever think "canned" lights are enough for a kitchen. Bad lighting can make your kitchen not only difficult to function in, but uninviting as well.

As in every other space, kitchens require layers of lighting to make the rooms usable in the manner intended. Here are some things to consider in your designs:
Size of the space is the main factor. The larger the space, the more lighting needed. This can be accomplished by adding brighter bulbs or more fixtures.
Light is needed where tasks are performed, i.e. countertops, etc. Keep in mind the variety of tasks that can occur in these rooms. I love dimmers, they can make task lighting fixtures appropriate for a wider range of uses.
The colors used within a space may reflect or absorb light and require more or less wattage to compensate.
Natural lighting will also play a roll, but sufficient artificial lighting is needed to compensate for gray days or night time usage.
Use lighting to accentuate architectural details or artwork. This lighting will not add to the overall task or ambient lighting, it is solely intended to highlight details.
Make sure that the color temperature of all bulbs is similar; the different fixtures will require varying bulb types so keeping the color temperature consistent will form a more cohesive design. The best range is between about 3000-4000 Kelvin, a nice, warm light.

Specifically in kitchens, under-cabinet lighting is perfect for illuminating tasks performed on countertops like chopping or mixing. The fixtures should be placed towards the front of the cabinet to spread light across the entire counter. Under-cabinet fixtures are available in a wide variety, including halogen, fluorescent and LED. Manufacturers like Kichler are now offering LED under-cabinet lights that are dimmable and produce virtually no heat, perfect for kitchens that leave under-cabinet lighting on for long periods of time.

This site has lots of options, from pendant lights to small chandeliers and under-cabinet fixtures too. Check them out to add a lighting plan that will look beautiful!

Kohler Kitchen and Bath
This is a great site to start your dream process. It keeps you focused on your kitchen or bathroom.

I really like Kohler too, it's a good solid brand. Very well made, good prices (don't pay attention to their "retail" on the site, those are MSRP so you'll always find the items for less), and great design.
The Great Indoors
Click on "Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling", it at least gives you a list of brands for you to consider when looking for appliances or fixtures for your kitchen. There is a wide range of quality but at least there is a range.
Video Guide for the Ultimate Kitchen
There is some good info. on this site with alot of ads. If you don't mind that, snoop around under "design", "how-to", "products", "shop" and you can even check out shows at "TV shows" specifically with kitchens as the focus.
Food Network
Check out "videos" on this site. Yes they are cooking shows but where do you think they are cooking on those shows? You got it cool kitchens. Now yes some of those kitchens are on a stage but look outside of the box and see what some of the top chefs are doing in their kitchens and with the video you can get a better feel of the kitchen than a magazine.

Besides you may pick up a great recipe or two!

Bright & Cheery Kitchen

Countertop Options

Counter Intelligence

There are alot of options out there for kitchen countertops and narrowing down the choices can sometimes prove overwhelming. Hopefully this top four will easily narrow your focus.

On a personal note...With the Return On Investment so high with kitchens right now, I would always recommend trying to do your countertops in granite if at all possible, that is a big sell point and they are beautiful.
  1. Natural Stone:
From granite to marble to travertine, the color possibilities are virtualy limitless. Granite, which is the least porous of the natural stones, is extremely durable. Hot pots and pans will not damage the surface; it will not scratch or crack under normal everyday use, and is resistant to most stains. Marble and travertine are more porous and require more mainentance, so scratching and staining may occur if not maintained properly. Therefore, all natural stones should be sealed.
  2. Zodiaq:
Requiring some of the lowest maintenance of all the selections, this engineered stone offered in a variety of colors can be a wise investment option. It is a quartz product, meaning it has exceptional hardness and is scratch and stain-resistant and does not require sealing, but it is not as heat resistant as granite.
  3. Corian:
The most impressive benefit of this solid surface countertop is that it is seamless, providing a streamlined look that many homeowners seek. These counters are also stain-resistant, and scratches are easily repaired, making it a popular choice for countertops. The darker colors may require more mainentance.
  4. Ceramic Tile:
This is the best selection for the budget-conscious homeowner who would like to achieve a sophisticated look in their home. Tile is very versatile, with variations in color, texture, and design. Ceramic, however, will chip and crack so you will have to be more careful with installation and usage.
  5. Stainless Steel:
Because these are sanitary, easy to clean and provide good heat proof surfaces they are very common in restaurants. There are different grades and thicknesses of stainless steel. Make sure the steel is wrapped completely around the edges of the substrate to protect it. Stainless steel is very expensive and shows fingerprints very easily and definitely dents and scratches as well.
  6. Concrete:
These are durable, heat resistant and can be formed into any shape with the ability to embed things in or dye them. If you don't want to maintain a countertop, don't choose concrete, theses tops are very porous and will need to be sealed. No matter how often you keep them sealed they do stain easily. Ties in perfectly with transitional and contemporary styles.
  7. Recycled Glass:
This is a great way to go green, they are eco-friendly and durable. They do however cost about the same as granite.

Kitchen Windows.

Kitchen windows need window treatments too.

If you are lucky enough to have a kitchen window most likely at some point of the day due to privacy or the sun in your face you'll want to control the window with a window treatment.

Check out American Blinds for the best selection, price wise they can't be beat either.

It seems like everyone always has questions or need some level of help in their own personal remodels. Are you one of them? Do you want fast, affordable, professional decorating advice before you tackle your next room?

Decorator On Demand is designed especially for you.

I am an experienced residential Interior Designer who is ready when you are to build a custom room recommendation that reflects your taste, goals and budget.

Enjoy the satisfaction of professionally decorating your home yourself. Get professional, unbiased advice and a custom room design with a detailed action plan.

Save time, money and stomach acid.

Just $249 per room, a fraction of what a local Interior Designer would charge.

So we work as a team.....I create the "Concept" and you make it a "Reality"!

This works for all of you who have angst about "next steps" or are scared about what to do or how to get started.

We have all had the well intentioned stylish family and friends who after their comments and suggestions were given, were insulted when you didn't take all their advice. Who needs it?

All I need to start this process from you are some pics, measurements and my "Get To Know My Room" questionnaire filled out for us to start. I go to work from there putting together an actionable/detailed plan, 90% of the time with links to national retailers for furnishing needs so you get the "idea" of what I am conveying to you. A lot of times my clients end up buying that furniture but you aren't obligated at all, I make no money on those.

My design recommendation covers all aspects of the room, ie: flooring, paint choices, furnishings, window treatments.

Email is great isn't it? That is the way I communicate with all my DOD clients. I am fast with my recommendation and then I allow you to have me for a day of back and forth email if you have any questions to make sure you are completely comfortable with the plan for you to execute.

I have been doing this for almost 5 years now and this concept works. At the end of the day, my intention of starting this company was to help you and so I want you happy and satisfied.

So come check out my website and if you have any questions please feel free to email me as well.
