It is so Simple: How to Grow a Vegetable Garden

I have been experimenting with different ways to grow vegetables in our back yard. The following links are some of my successes. Check them out.

I am going to keep a photo log here of this years garden. Bookmark this page now and come back often to see what is going on in my garden.

Lots of Insects to See

April 19, 2012

It is amazing the number of different insects that make my backyard their home. Some of them are very useful like the spiders and the beetles. Then there are some that are harmful like the caterpillars and the inchworms who like to eat every leaf they can get their multitude of legs on. I thought I would take a moment to show you some of the insects I found on my little trek through the garden.

Planting my Avocado Pits in a Pot

March 13, 2012

I decided to plant the Avocado Pits in a pot on the Kitchen Counter to see if I can get them to sprout. I have done the "Suspend them in Water" thing several times. I just want to see if I can get them to sprout in a pot. This will be fun to watch.

$3 Greenhouse for my Radishes

February 7, 2012

I planted Early Scarlet Globe Radishes and California Wonder 300 TMR Peppers. It might be a little early for them to germinate, but maybe they will when the weather gets warmer. Either way, the plastic containers will keep them from freezing at night.

Yellow Ground Wasp

It is a little Creepy and Cool at the Same Time

I was told that this was a Yellow Cicada Ground Wasp. Apparently what they do is grab a dead cicada and bury it into the ground and lay they eggs in the carcas. Then the eggs hatch and the larve have something to munch on. Interesting little bugger. I guess it is true. after a day or so, I quit seeing the wasp. It had covered up its hole and that was all there was to it.

Sprouting Basil

May 26, 2011

I have a little Basil Sprouting And a Cicada Eating Dog. I planted the basil I harvested last year. It only took them a few days to start sprouting. I hope they do well where I have planted them. They are in soil that is mostly red clay. There is a little bit of mulch and potting soil I used from last year.

I also caught Jessi eating a cicada. She's Funny.

Self Watering Container Gardening

May 11, 2011

I built this self watering Container from Free Buckets I got from the Bakery at the grocery store. I wanted something that was going to water my tomatoes for me so I didn't have to remember to go out there everyday to water the plants. This worked out well and I will show you what I did to make the container that only cost me for the soil and the seed.

Fighting the Cicadas

May 10, 2011

Every 13 years these little buggers come out and make a lot of noise and get on everything and chase everyone around. They are harmless to people, but they do come in mass numbers and the noise they make can get so loud that they sound like a car alarm going off.

In my garden I have noticed their skins hanging empty on my deck and trees and everywhere else they decided to break out of them. Now the Cicadas are hanging out on my fruit trees. I don't see any damage on the trees themselves except for what the ladybugs are doing. I am hoping the Cicadas soon die off and all their offspring go back into the ground and don't come back for another 13 years.

Gate To Keep the Dog Out of the Garden

May 7th, 2011

Garden Fence

Jessi tore everything out of the ground. I was able to save the trees and Moved three of the flowering bushed to the front yard to keep her from chewing on them. We decided to put up a gate to keep her from getting into the garden. This is a photo of the Finished Gate. Take a look at the following lens to see how I installed it.

Getting a Late Start

May 4, 2011

Protecting my Apple Trees

I have been itching for the past two months to start something in the garden. I was not able to grow anything in March because we were still getting nightly frosts. In April there were several frosts that killed some of my early tomatoes. Then I found it nearly impossible to grow anything because the new puppy has a bad habit of pulling everything with roots out of the ground. I even had to place large stones around my apple and pear trees so she would stop digging at them.

Planning for 2011

Written December 28, 2010

I am looking forward to my garden in 2011. I received some gifts for Christmas that I think will make my garden more of a success this year. I asked for some timers and a soaker hose so I can go out there and make sure they get watered for decent amount of time. I am hoping it will help me get the plants watered on a regular basis and they will do better this year.

The other project I am planning for this spring is a self watering system, an aquaponic system that will water itself using wind power. I am trying to design a recycled setup that will use some sort of turbine that will push the water up to higher layer and water the plants. I will show you when I can get this to work.

think I have the wasps, too, or something like them. They may have double black wings cause the red/orange doesn't show much 'til they fly. Quite a few of them were BUSY after I pulled/cleared an area of weeds/tall grasses the other day. Did you have very many of them? Though I didn't feel a sting, I have a few hard itchy bumps maybe from the little critters. The funny thing is, last year there were critters that looked more like bees dwelling in the earth here.

It's that time of year isn't it? I'm a little bummed that our space is so limited in this new house. I had such an awesome set up at our old house (and I see the landlords who moved back in are using my space!). Anyway, my best successes are tomatoes unless I get a bad case of stink bugs. I HATE stink bugs! I've also had success with hot peppers. What I really want to grow successfully is watermelon - I've never had a good one. I hope you have a wonderful garden this year.

Robert. Just saw your yellow squash episode. Don't worry about the ladybugs. They aren't chewing on your plants, aphids are. And ladybugs eat aphid eggs and adults. The other way to get rid of aphids is to water blast them off with your hose.
