Have you heard about the disastrous shortage of Marmite since the Christchurch factory was damaged in the quakes? Just take a look at what's going on at Trademe.co.nz! People have gone mad!

I can sympathise with English not being English to other folk! When I arrived in NZ from Africa I was confused about 'bring a plate'. Fortunately my husband, who is a Kiwi, put me right as I was going to phone the host and ask if they needed anything else...cutlery or more plates, chairs etc!

Great lens! FYI, U.S. consulates in foreign countries can no longer accept visa applications (re: Marrying a Yank). Enjoying your articles. Keep it up!

Hello! We're co-hosting a wonderful fundraising event to help the people of Christchurch rebuild after the earthquake. This will happen on August 3 in Burlington, Vermont, USA. If you would like to attend, please contact me at connie@cliohistory.org. Or you may send donations to American Friends of Christchurch, c/o Carolyn Dwyer, 329 Murray Hill Road, Montpelier, VT 05602. 100% of donations will go directly to earthquake relief efforts. Thank you!

    Hi Gayle,
Thanks for your comment. I really enjoyed reading your blog when I was setting mine up.It provided more than a few laughs. It does sound like we have had some fairly similar experiences. Surprisingly there aren't many blogs from Kiwis in the States (but there are loads from Americans in NZ).
Oh, some homemade soup sounds great! I do miss that. Some good pumpkin soup. I've either tried or been told all about pumpkin pie, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread and roasted pumpkin seeds...but no soup!

Just stumbled across this but you had prob told me about it. Well writ girl. And very clever. WIsh I was coming for your road trip to Lake Michigan. Juanita is looking forward to it. Have just seen a pic of her in Colerado whilst branding some cattle with some handsome lookin dudes. Cowboy butts still drive me nuts even tho I got one of my own!! The Dallas group would have been good for her to catch up with most likely.

Kia ora to fellow kiwis out there ,awesome site !!,...I dont miss Marmite yet ,but its only been a month . No Ive been too busy stuffing my gob with sugar-laden goodies ,the Americans just blow us away when it comes to convenience foods aye ,but I will say this my teen was right ,it is better that fresh foods in NZ is cheaper than fastfood!! absolutely makes more sense . But damn those 99c deals work for me .
    Im such a hypocrite.
Hey be neat to hear from other kiwis even one who lives nearby , grab a coffee and yakety yak.
Can I leave my email in here ?
Thanks again for an awesome site

Great to catch up on some true blue kiwi culture. I've been looking at pics of meat pies, moro bars & milo & makes me homesicker :) I've been here in San Diego for 10 years & some days I feel like the only Kiwi rattling around in the place. Nice site, I'll be back often :)
    Take it easy

Wow, I just found this page and I think it helped me, and Gayle helped me, fifty times more then any other site I've been too over the last three years.

I'm in Christchurch at the moment, but hoping to move to Texas soon enough to be with my boyfriend there. I've lived in FL for two months previously, and in Xmas we might be holidaying in TX for two months as well. I cant wait, and look forward to joining the rest of the "Kiwi's in America"!

    Thanks heaps Miss Gayle.

    Oh my God!
    I am crying reading this.
I am a kiwi in Denver since May 8th, and breaking into the American way of life is not easy. America is wonderful and quirky and I need to say this very quietly, BUT if it wasn't for love and the best friend I have ever had WHO would want to leave ENZED.

Its like America was built by embracing the lost and hopeful of the world, now the brave travellers to the new world just get spat out. It is NOT easy to get here, or feel welcomed. MEXICO has killed all that I believe.

I am desperate to make contact and network with other kiwis here. I am an Intermediate School teacher from Whangarei.

Man I miss the beach being up the road, and cities being knowable. Denver confuses me.

BUT I see great beauty here, the mountains, the good parts of American culture........and my friendship with Susan.

Please check out my blogs from my jump page @ http://theblindpoet.com

    Please.

    Graham

Great site Gayle! I want to go visit New Zealand! My husband has wanted to go there forever too. Maybe we can manifest the trip and have a fantastic experience on the other side of the world.

Hi KiwiGayle, this is the perfect use of a lens! I've spent plenty of time in Kiwiland, and love it and the people there. None of that false Aussie/Kiwi competition for me!

    I feel homesick reading this!
  • susannaduffy Jul 23, 2008 @ 12:37 am | delete
How can there be any comparison between Vegemite and Marmite? Marmite is a pale and sickly imitation of a glorious, soul-lifting culinary delight.

I would wither and fade away without my vegemite toast each morning.

I am setting up a Kiwi-Koala club in dallas with the help of a school friend - Janet Maloy. Can you believe wewent to Otahuhu Primary together from 1959 to 1961 (makes us sound old) She tracked me down in dallas, and I discussed the idea of a club. For out first meet our guest speaker will be Dr Peter Snell. We will be meeting for the first time in a restaurant in Rockwall around the end of august.
Love to hear form kiwi's or aussie's interested in joining. The email address is
    kiwi.koala_8@yahoo.com.
Love to hear from some "mates"

I found your lens fascinating and your personal insight wonderful. It's a great resource for anyone
moving from one country to another not just from New Zealand.

Hey great lens! I'll definitely have to favorite this one!
  • poddys Jul 7, 2008 @ 9:35 pm | delete
Very nice lens, 5***** Having spent 9 months in Auckland I can understand a lot about Kiwi culture. I still claim though that Marmite knocks spots off Vegemite (although basically the same thing), and the gravy was so bad I had to get Bisto shipped over from England. But I loved it over there...
  • debnet Jul 7, 2008 @ 12:02 pm | delete
Hi Gayle, I love the lens! I can empathise with the language stuff & missing Marmite!! I'm about to leave the UK & spend a year in Florida, so I'm busy collecting items I just can't be without, such as Marmite ;)
