Free Patterns and Stitches for the Knifty Knitter Knitting Loom
Some experienced knitters prefer looms to needles because they are fast. Looms also make it easy to pick up where you left off without your work unraveling while you are away.
The "Knifty Knitter" is a specific brand of knitting loom. There are long looms that work best for making blankets and scarves. The round looms work well for socks, hats, and mittens. Here you will find more information about the buying Knifty Knitter looms, wrapping the looms, making stitches and free Knifty Knitter patterns! The knit in the photo above was created using the longest of the Knifty Knitter looms and the "no wrap" stitch.
Introduction to Loom Knitting
How to Use Knifty Knitter Looms

To use a Knifty Knitter knitting loom, you usually begin by wrapping each peg once. This is called, "casting on." After wrapping the loom, you use your tool to "knit off" around the Knifty Knitter loom, to create your knit. The photo captures knitting off, as the loop on the peg is pulled gently toward the knitter, over the yarn above it and off the loom.
I have experimented with many different methods of wrapping the loom and knitting off. The "no wrap" stitch is by far my favorite. It is the basic knit stitch in traditional knitting. It does not become tight and difficult to knit, as some wraps will. This stitch is pictured in the photo to the right. You can find the "no wrap" stitch instructions and instructions for many methods of wrapping and casting off the Knifty Knitter in the links below.

Panel vs Tube Knitting on the Knifty Knitter Loom
Tube knitting is knitting around the Knifty Knitter loom in continuous circles to make things like socks and hats that have no seam. Panel knitting is back and forth knitting on the loom with a break, so that the finished knit is a flat piece of fabric like a blanket. It is a common misconception that round Knifty Knitter looms are for tube knitting and rectangle Knifty Knitter looms are for panel knitting. In fact, either type of knitting can be done on either type of loom. Read more...

One over one stitches on a Knifty Knitter Loom
Instructions for a Beginner
The one over one stitch when done with a single strand of medium or light-weight yarn on a Knifty Knitter loom creates a fishnet type knit that is perfect for creating bags, or fishnet stockings. It is also great for any project that requires a lacy look.
When done with two strands of medium to heavy weight yarn, it creates knit as seen on the left. The stitch is equivalent to the twisted stockinette stitch made with needles. It is also known in loom kntting as the "EWrap."One Over One Stitches on a Knitting Loom

Make Your Own Knitting Loom?
So, you want to try a knitting loom, but

Not sure you want to lay out the cash for a knitting loom? How about making one from a repurposed plastic bottle? Honestly the loom pegs have to be evenly spaced and not catch the yarn to produce quality knit, but due to my love of reuse and repurposing, I couldn't help but offer these options for making a knitting loom out of plastic bottles. Too cool!

- If I were making a baby blanket on the long looms, I would use the figure eight or the honeycomb wrap using two yarns as if they are one. They are double panel knit, so they don't roll at the edges.
