hia, I have rectangular looms and I have something in mind but I do not know what it's called. It's like a sweater but without arms. One panel in the back and two panels in front. (Like a vest but longer)

What is this tipe of knitwear called and does any one know where I can find a pattern for it?!

what is the best stitch to use when making a baby blanket on the long loom
  • HSSchulte Jan 26, 2012 @ 5:30 pm | delete
If I were making a baby blanket on the long looms, I would use the figure eight or the honeycomb wrap using two yarns as if they are one. They are double panel knit, so they don't roll at the edges.

Wow! When I was a kid, my Dad drove finishing nails into the end of a wooden thread spool to make us a "knitting spool". I have a small round plastic loom that is over 30 years old that was called a knitting knobby, and now a Knifty Knitter that can make hats scarves etc. Time does change things!

I tried to use my Knifty Knitter round loom to make a hat and I just could not get it to work...the hat was too small. I am going to work through some of your tutorials and see if I can figure out what I did wrong. Thanks for the great lens.
  • HSSchulte Jan 5, 2012 @ 4:57 pm | delete
HarmonyArtMom, what size hat were you making and which loom did you use? I try to make a point of mentioning that the blue round looms are for *preemie* and *newborn* hats only. They are too small for a typical baby. I would use the medium looms for most baby hats.

Thanks for your lens! My almost 11 year old son wants knitting frame for his birthday gift, and I'm trying to figure out which set to get. It would be great if you mentioned the gauge the frames knit to, because I want to get him a frame set that knits wo about 5 sts per inch (worsted weight).

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to make a baby blanket? I just need to know how to sew the panels together in the simplest way possible. I have googled every possible phrase and searched through countless YouTube videos and found no answers to this simple question. If I had the patience to crochet I would but that unfortunately is a virtue I was not blessed with. PLEASE HELP ME :/
    Thanks, Brianna

I am doing a shrug, my first project on the Knifty Knitter. The very rough pattern I have says 2 strings 40 rows Backand Forth What does that mean, hoe do I do it?
  • HSSchulte Oct 2, 2011 @ 5:47 pm | delete
Hi Brenda, it is always difficult to figure out the first pattern. It gets easier with each one! When it says "2 strings," it means wrap the loom with two strands of yarn as if they are one. When it says "40 rows back and forth," that means knit all the way around the loom and the reverse direction and knit back the other direction. This is the opposite of knitting in a spiral, or continually around in the same direction. Patterns will instruct you to do one or the other. HTH

My mother does not have a computer so I've been copying instructions for the knifty knitter looms because she wants to make an afghan and the instructions did not come with the looms. She needs to watch it on a video because reading it is just not working. Do you have beginners video for making afghans? Please help

If she wants to knit squares and then connect them (like crocheted granny squares), this video is good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlVu9yAw3Ko
Honeycomb panels sewn together are my personal favorite. You can find those here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyVBuXg3ZFs

I remember making these as a child. They were very simple to make and quick too.. Does anyone have any idea where I can find a pattern for this.. I do not knit or crochet but i loved making these hot pads as a child and would like to teach my children also

I bought a Knifty Knitter Round loom set specifically for the hat on the box. The directions included are for a basic hat. The hat on the box has ear flaps that can tie under the chin.
I looked on their website, and didn't find instructions to help me, wrote to them, and they sent me a link to this site.
I can probably use a spool loom to make the ties, then crochet something for the flaps, but it would be guesswork.
Do you have any ideas where I could find instructions for this?
    Thanks!
    Barb

    Joy,
Provo Craft, the manufacturer of Knifty Knitter looms, doesn't currently make an "s" loom to my knowledge, but here are some "s" looms that I have seen: http://www.cindwoodcrafts.com/catalog.php?type=0&cid=2
  • Craftybegonia Jan 20, 2011 @ 3:59 pm | delete
My mom bought a whole set of those looms, what do you do about the holey quality of the knitted fabric? Do you always have to use things 2-ply?
  • HSSchulte Jan 20, 2011 @ 5:07 pm | delete
    Crafty,

The ewrap and the no wrap are the least "holey" of all the stitches. They have a tight weave with only one yarn. If you are doing a ribbed stitch, honeycomb stitch, etc., you really need to use two yarns as one to cut down on the space in the finished knit.

I am trying to make the afghan shawl with my long loom and it goes from a tube knit one-over-two to decrease to a ribbed one-over-one. I not sure how to decrease that from two to one if you can help that would be great thanks.
  • HSSchulte Dec 26, 2010 @ 5:57 pm | delete
    Hi Misty,

When you finish your last row of one-over-two stitches, you will have two loops on each peg of the loom. Before moving to your next stitch, one-over-one, you simply don't wrap the loom before knitting off the first row. With the two loops that are already on each peg, bring the bottom loop over the top and off the peg (one over one).
Hope you are enjoying knitting with your knifty knitter looms!
  • chemknitsblog Dec 9, 2010 @ 10:12 am | delete
This is really a fantastic reference for people who want to learn to knit but are intimidated by the needles and keeping track of stitches. I visited this lens my first day on Squidoo, and now I'm back to bless it!
  • CraftyWife&Mom Nov 8, 2010 @ 11:19 am | delete
When using the long Knifty Knitting Loom, I get frustrated because the loops keep unwrapping off of the pegs. What am I doing wrong?
  • HSSchulte Dec 15, 2010 @ 7:57 pm | delete
Pushing the loops down on the pegs can help. I make a habit of doing this until I'm ready to knit off. You may also consider wrapping slightly tighter. Be careful not to wrap too tightly or you will have difficulty removing the loops.
  • chemknitsblog Nov 1, 2010 @ 4:24 pm | delete
Have you ever seen the looms that you crank and they knit for you? You are really limited in what you can make, but cranking scarves out like that is crazy.
