Korean War Veterans Memorial

On a recent trip to Washington DC, the one exhibit that I really wanted to see was the Korean War Veterans Memorial. I'd heard that it was impressive.

Well, impressive doesn't even begin to describe it. It's breathtaking. It's awe-inspiring. And it's a "must see" if you ever visit Washington DC. Just one of the many remarkable sights to see in the Capitol of the United States of America.

This page is my attempt to describe what I saw and how it impressed me.

NOTE: All of the photgraphs are mine.

About the Korean War

The Korean War lasted from 1950 - 1953 after the North Korean government attacked South Korea. The United Nations agreed to defend the South Korea democracy and sent troops including a million and a half Americans. Since it had been only five years since the end of World War II, it was a lot to ask of our military and the war was extremely unpopular.

About the Korean War Veterans' Memorial

The Korean War Veterans Memorial is a National Momument located on The Mall, Washington, D.C.

The memorial is in the form of a triangle intersecting a circle. In the circle is the "Pool of Remembrance", a granite pool 30 feet in diameter. The pool is surrounded by bushes, trees and benches. The statues are larger than life and represent a squad on patrol in Korea.

An artist named Frank Gaylord of Barre, Vermont sculpted 19 statues. Mr. Gaylord was a World War II veteran. The wall of etched faces was created by Louis Nelson. The ground breaking began in November of 1993.

"They are approximately 7'3" tall, heroic scale and consist of 14 Army, 3 Marines, 1 Navy, 1 Air Force. They represent an ethnic cross section of America with 12 Caucasian, 3 African American, 2 Hispanic, 1 Oriental, 1 Indian (Native American)." as noted by the The Army Corps of Engineers website which intricately maps the details of the memorial with a legend showing which statues represent which soldiers.

This most impressive memorial was dedicated on July 27, 1995, the 42nd anniversary of the armistice.

My Photo Album - The Korean War Veterans Memorial

This slide show includes many other photos I took while visiting Washington DC. I did try to include only the Korean War Veterans Memorial pictures but Flickr apparently had other ideas. That's fine, though, because I like the other pictures, as well!

An Untold Story of the Korean War

A movie you won't want to miss...

From the Amazon description:

"...They faced entire regiments of Chinese, abominable subarctic weather, shortages of supplies, and impossible or at least impassable terrain. Most of them were barely trained teenagers, but the training was marine training and their leaders were the formidable likes of First Sergeant Rocco Zullo, who isn't the only marine portrayed with great skill here."

Nancy, that image could very well be that of your father. Here's a quote from Louis Nelson, the man who designed the etchings on the wall.

"We went through 15,000 pictures from the National Archives and National Air and Space Museum before making our selection," said wall designer Louis Nelson, a well-known New York arts figure who served as an Army helicopter pilot during the Berlin crisis in the early 1960s."
