Seeking to make a difference

I am actively seeking to make a difference in our world and in our culture; as a marketing and digital communications professional, I have several current projects as described below. Thank you for visiting, and please consider leaving a message at the bottom of the lens. :-)

PS - I originally created this in application for Seth Godin's Alternative MBA Program. Why? because I believe in the power of leadership through social networking. I am proud to be a member of his social network, Triiibes.

This is a true story about making a change in the world...

I grew up singing and dancing my little heart out with the Showtime Dance Studio, raising money for the studio's non-profit association "Kick for KARE." Since it's inception in 1981, the studio's owner and director, Cathy Hillyer, and her kids have raised over $300,000 for the Neonatal ICU at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies; all the while imprinting her slogan "we build confidence and make fond memories for children" on the hearts and minds of over 500,000 girls.

A few of my peers from those days have gone on to launch glamorous Hollywood and Broadway careers, but many more have matured into leaders of their community as doctors, lawyers and other professionals. These experiences challenged me to be brave and smart as well as poised and graceful, and after many early successes, I returned to my community as a teacher in the digital arts at Full Sail University. Over the next two years, I taught a monthly course on promotional technology and created a method for teaching character animation through theatrical improvisation.

McMahon's Jazz Medicine: online music store for the medical community at www.mcmahonjazzmedicine.comAfter a few years as a teacher, I started a career in musical theater, traveling and promoting my fellow performers through multimedia. This led to my employment at the McMahon Group, where I developed an online store called McMahon's Jazz Medicine for selling music therapy CDs that raised money for Doctors of the World.

PERFORMING ARTS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN:
A dream I've carried with me for years is to fight obesity, insecurity and sloth by reinventing the dance studio; adding self-confidence, accomplishment, advocacy, social networking and music technology to the syllabus. One day, I'd like to partner with a dance/fitness instructor and make this dream a reality.

What do I do now?

RECENTLY AT VISIBLE WORLD
As the Marketing Manager at this Emmy award-winning advertising technology and service provider, I designed and produced all sales tools; such as brochures, give-aways, and events. The company is leading the charge toward the future of television: T-commerce (the web-like capabilities of purchasing through your television set) and household addressability (the process by which you'll get a different commercial than your neighbor, based on your demographics and purchases).

In my spare time, I am active in three other organizations:

ALL SOULS INTERNET OUTREACH INITIATIVE (ASIOI):
As founder and President, I'm so proud of our team of internet and communications professionals who are working to develop the social networking capabilities of the All Souls Church in New York City, and support outreach for Unitarian Universalists.

ALL SOULS CAREER BOOK CLUB (ASCBC):
http://www.squidoo.com/careerbookclub
(hosted by the Forty Plus Career Support Association)
As founder and facilitator, I started this group my to attract and empower like-minded individuals who are on a quest to expand their minds and professionalism by reading and discussing great career books. I've recently partnered with The Forty Plus Career Support Association because we have the same client demography. Their organiation, which is currently funded solely by membership, has great potential as a largely self-run philanthropy: helping the gainfully unemployed help themselves and each other to find long-term and fulfilling employment. With the right financial support and infrastructure, this association could grow ten- or 100-fold and be a central force in the NYC business community. I would like to be a part of making this happen.

TAPESTRY CHORUS:
I'm honored to be a soloist in this group which performs popular jazz and musical theater selections, conducted by Rod Sorenson.

Why do I do it?

VISIBLE WORLD:
This forward-thinking, quick-moving company is run by industry experts, who create and promote disruptive technologies and practices to the giants of advertising, cable, and broadcast. Visible World provides excellent opportunities for me to sharpen my marketing skills, communicate with professionals in many Fortune 500 companies, and learn to use online services like Salesforce, Marketo and Vocalyst.

ALL SOULS INTERNET OUTREACH INITIATIVE:
My church's technology is in the dark ages. As a voice of reason and liberal religion, I believe Unitarian Universalists provide an enlightened counterbalance to the dogma and intolerance of right-wing activism. The ASIOI is making a difference by empowering other activists' good deads. Personally, ASIOI is teaching me about the current social networking tools and provides an opportunity for me to lead a project fueled by other leaders, while helping me to become an expert in the field of "tribal" social networking.

ALL SOULS CAREER BOOK CLUB:
Living so close to Wall Street, I've watched my community suffer through fear, stress, long work hours, and layoffs by the 100,000s. My response was to start ASCBC as a presence of hope, knowledge, support, and action. ASCBC is expanding my business acumen while providing a forum for me to teach and directly impact others' lives and careers. It is a networking and cross-marketing opportunity too, especially now with my new partnership with Forty Plus.

TAPESTRY CHORUS:
This musical outlet helps me stay in touch with my creativity and joy of the entertainment culture. Once we have a recording, I will make a MySpace page, events calendar and listserv.

What astonishing thing did I do before I did what I do now?

I was a musical theater and operetta performer for several years, trotting state-to-state in productions like "My Fair Lady," "Mame," "Pirates of Pinzance," "Gypsy," "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat," and many others. I've lived in Alaska, West Virginia, Maine, Maryland and several parts of Florida. For a while, I performed professionally in NYC, culminating in two off-Broadway shows.

During my travels, I noticed that many theaters and entertainers could benefit from better promotions (including videos of their auditions, music videos, etc.) So, I created a digital media promotional company called "PerforMedia Studio." Today the studio's "tips and tales" reside on www.kristinreign.com and show some of the earlier theatrical work, as well as newer marketing material.

What am I hoping to learn?

The MBA level skills in strategy, communications and analytics that are appropriate for a creative, socially-conscious dreamer like myself, and necessary to become the tribal leader that I hope to be. Advanced project management skills in a digital world: I've been a designer, developer, and presenter and yet struggle to convert data into strategy, form consensus and manage upward. I've built my career through the marketing of small companies, b2b, b2c, even b2d (business to doctor). I love the operations and tactics of marketing, and I seek to find greater agility, efficiency and effectiveness. I would like to make a difference, and I'm seduced by the advantages of social networking for advocacy and leadership.

People who inspire me

My husband for his generosity and discipline, my sister for her empathy and fearlessness, my friends for their enlightenment and talents, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Forrest Church, Eleanor Roosevelt, Tara Walpert Levy, John Stewart, Seth Godin, Cathy Clara Barton, Aldous Huxley, EB White, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Maura Kennedy, Alan Menken, Stephen Sondheim, Shaun T, Barbara Walters, Oprah, Drew Barrymore, Amy Brenneman, Cate Blanchett, Donald Trump

I wish...

I wish that life was easier. That good triumphs. That love conquers all.
I wish that ice cream was a diet food, and that salad was comfort food.
I wish that cars actually ran on water, or even better, garbage (like in the movie, "Back to the Future"), and homes on sunlight.
I wish that parents spent more time with their kids, and kids on homework.
I wish American Idol would die, and that reality TV would air world news through kids' eyes.
I wish that healthier food choices permeated convenient stores and restaurants, that there was more diversity in so-called health/nutrition articles, and that high-gluten/high-fat/processed foods had an imposed "Junk Food Tax."
I wish that the activism spurred by our historical Presidential race would evolve into continued activism and productivity by all Americans, and that "Western Culture" could be seen again by the world as an asset in their communities rather than a curse.

Healthy pizza? Pizza by nature is healthy. No trans fats, and packed with great things like Lycopene, calcium, and good carbs. One of the most cost effective family foods out there, and at only 250 calories a slice, it is much less than most fast food out there.

Now if you want an unhealthy pizza, I can make a great mayo based bacon and jalapeno pizza that will harden your veins just looking at it. Hmmmm. I think I know what I will have for dinner.

Kristin - Mayor does have a nice ring to it! Why the heck not? We're finding leaders from improbable places every day. Your leadership experience can increase exponentially in this program and certainly be a platform for you to get into politics.

Thanks for reading and commenting on my lens.
I'd love to chat with you about life in Japan, as I just visited my sister, who's taught there at the university level for the past three years. I would have loved to stop into your shop for a slice, and will look forward to reading your Pizza 2.0 blog. Maybe you'll have a "healthy pizza" column (wink!)

Great lens. This is one of the top apps I have seen yet.

Good ice cream pretty much IS a diet food, and I totally agree that junk food (not pizza of course) needs to be taxed. Throw it right in there with tobacco and alcohol, as one of the unnecessary things in life that the under-educated use to medicate the daily toil of the unexamined life.

I hope we can work together in NY.
