Weird and wonderful in Kansas

Land of Oz

I may live in the UK, but I'm a Kansas girl by birth. Born and reared there. So when we went back to Kansas on holiday in 2004 I wanted to look for some of the sights off the beaten track. What we found was a land of wonder and weirdness. Great natural beauty and awe-inspiring eccentricity.

So my advice to you - if you ever find yourself driving across Kansas, get off the Interstate! There is a lot to see out there.

I-70 Across Kansas is a Long Drive

so I kooked for attractions across Kansas

Our diversions across Kansas were a way of dividing up a drive from Point A - Denver airport, to point B - Topeka, Kansas. We were travelling with our then 15 year old and 18 month old sons and I was 6 months pregnant with the youngest. We had plenty of time and didn't want to drive for extended lengths if we didn't have to.

Instead, I searched the internet to see just what was out there. These are some of the places we found.

I've pinpointed the locations of the above sights.

The Barbed Wire Museum

LaCrosse, Kansas

We decided to stop off and see the Barbed Wire Museum on a whim. Might be a bit naff, but that's okay. Much to our surprise though, this museum was actually quite interesting. We ended up spending over an hour wandering around looking at all of the different displays.

As for that tangle up above. It's a crow's nest.

What better time than now to get a new digital camera.

The Garden of Eden

Lucas, Kansas

Lucas, Kansas is a small non-descript town in the middle of Kansas. No one would have ever heard of it if not for a man by the name of Samuel P. Dinsmoor. The house is made of limestone cut to look like logs; a sculpture garden surrounds it. Dinsmoor opened his home as a tourist attraction in 1908. He continued to build his concrete and stone monument to biblical man as well as making social statements until his death in 1933. And beyond. You can view his intombed body in a specially built mausoleum in one corner of the garden.

Welcome to the Garden of Eden, where you are greeted by Adam and Eve, holding an outstretched apple.

Everything looks so normal from this angle

Until you notice the tree is concrete and the logs on this cabin are actually limestone cut to look like logs.

Some of his visions are strange

Others simply defy description

Monument Rocks

Gove County, Kansas

We actually spent so much time driving we wondered if we had somehow missed this place. There's no building, no gift shop, no well, nothing. Then, suddenly, you find yourself crossing over a cattle guard, and you're in the middle of a field.

And this is in front of you.

Towering to heights of over 70 feet

These chalk formations are a reminder that once the whole of Kansas was a vast inland sea.

This one has been dubbed "Camel Rock"

The World's Largest Ball of Sisal Twine

Cawker City, Kansas

This is another small town that would be unheard of except for one man, Frank Stoeber, and his desire to save a bit of twine. Within 4 years, it weighed 5,000 pounds.

The town has owned the ball of twine since 1961 and has been adding to it ever since.

If you get through Kansas in August, you might just be able to take part in the annual "Twine-a-thon".

These 5 places we visited are just a handful compared to the hundreds still out there. In these pages you can get a further introduction to the uniqueness that is Kansas.

Prairie Dog Town

Oakley, Kansas

Miles before you reach Oakley you will start to see signs along I-70. "See the world's largest prairie dog!" "Six-legged cow! "Two-headed goat!" "Rattlesnakes!"

Finally, you reach the turn off to Oakley in western Kansas. There, right near the interstate, is Prairie Dog Town.

Inside is a small gift shop with the usual tat and such you find in souvenir shops all over the world. Up on the wall is the mounted head of the above mentioned two-headed goat, long gone to meet the big Goat God in the sky. Off to one side is a large boxed container. Inside is a rattlesnake paradise.

Pay your admission fee, and out the back door into an open area contained a large number of animals, most in cages or fenced off but quite a few roaming free. Prairie dog mounds are everywhere, in and out of enclosures. Here and there you can see them popping their heads up to have a look round then disappearing back down again into a hole.

Don't forget to have a look at the world's largest prairie dog.

I lived in Wichita for about 10 months back in the early 1990's. Sadly, about the best thing I can say about the place is the view I had in my rear-view mirror when I was leaving. Guess I've been a Texan too long...

Love the Kansas prairie! I've never traveled much in this state, though, but I've seen beautiful photos like the ones you have here. The rock formations are simply beyond amazing.
